Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

Multidisciplinary Project is a master level course where student teams tackle a multidisciplinary real-life innovation challenge presented by a company or by a faculty member.

Teams will design, develop and test alternative solutions to the challenge, by (i) exploring possibilities for new products and services or finding ways to significantly improve existing products and services and (ii) developing the concepts to a level that they can be tested with the implementation of a proof-of-concept (POC) solution.

The course does not follow a standard weekly schedule.

There is an intensive kick-off week (first week of the semester), where projects are presented and assigned.

Coaching sessions will be available in the intermediate periods.

The main goal of this course, open to students from all Master Programs, is to work on projects leveraging information technology and interdisciplinary (horizontal) skills.  

The aim of the projects is to foster research and innovation to address challenging business cases.

Projects will emphasize requirements specification, design of a solution, and implementation of a proof of concept show-casing the feasibility of the solution.

Each project is mentored by a team of tutors, with different backgrounds.

Examples of projects developed in recent years range from self-driving cars, novel mobile apps, sensing smart cities, indoor localization applications for airports, artificial intelligence applications for space systems, and big data analytics and machine learning for healthcare.

A set of lectures will support students in the development of critical horizontal skills, in the topics of design thinking, design methods, decision making, innovation management, and economic evaluation from concept development to a startup creation.

Students will participate to small team-based concept development, considering case studies and innovative scenarios problem settings.

At the end of this course, students will learn to:

  • Understand the design thinking process
  • Generate and evaluate new product and service concepts
  • Design services and customer experiences
  • Evaluate product development economics

Knowledge and understanding

Students will learn:

-      Design thinking principles and methodologies

-      How to organize a project, structure it into phases, progressively develop each phase (from concept generation up to a significant demonstration of a proof of concept of the core ideas)

-      How to work in group and how to deliver public presentations, which will improve both team-based and individual presentation skills 

Applying knowledge and understanding

Given a problem that the students will autonomously define, students will then also be able to:

-      Detail the corresponding requirements

-      Analyse and comment on specific design choices

-      Develop and test a “demonstrator prototype” fulfilling the design specification document

Making judgements

Given a real problem, students will be able to:

-      Analyse and understand the goals, assumptions and requirements associated with that problem and model them

-      Estimate the resources needed for its development, identify risks and define mitigation actions

-      Evaluate the technical feasibility

-      Assess the project from an economic perspective (business plan)

Communication

Students will learn to:

-      Interact within groups and develop modern leadership skills

-      Give public presentations in front of the class

-      Provide a short convincing presentation (pitch) addressed to a potential investor

Lifelong learning skills

Students will:

-      Enhance their horizontal skills

-      Learn how to develop a realistic project of multidisciplinary nature

 


Argomenti trattati

The first lectures will be dedicated to providing an overview of the course content, and to the presentation of projects proposals.

Projects will be developed by groups of up to five students.

Project selection will be performed by students, who will indicate their preferences after project presentations.

Matching will attempt to satisfy the majority of students while, at the same time, allocating students to the majority of projects and satisfying projects disciplinary pre-requisites.

The projects will be monitored through follow-up and feedback sessions, focused on concept selection and requirements analysis, software design with emphasis on innovative aspects, and prototype presentation with a short pitch of the idea including a business plan. 


Prerequisiti

No major prerequisites are required. Competence in coding are useful in project development.

 


Modalità di valutazione

Project evaluation occurs at several presentations and concerns well-defined aspects at each presentation.  The final grade for the individual students will be obtained according to the following criteria:

  • Short report (20%)
  • Presentation skills as assessed during the intermediate and final presentatios (20%)
  • Intermediate presentations – focus on method (10%)
  • Final project presentation – focus on results (25%)
  • Final prototype (25%)
