Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The Studio is an 'international field' of theoretical research and advanced experimentation.

The reality, everywhere, asks architecture a thorough cultural and ethical responsibility. Therefore the teaching aims to consolidate disciplinary knowledge and theoretical references, to feed critical attitudes, to induce conscious design choices.  These tools allow to tackle the design of complex new buildings, with awareness of its formal, functional, structural, technological components.

The complexity of the design processes is faced and managed through the interconnection between the teachings of Architectural design, Architectural composition, Structure, Technology and design in BIM environment. The trans-disciplinary approach nourishes rationality and imagination and the possibility of recomposing form, function and construction in unitary visions, bearers of new reasons and meanings.

Lectures, project reviews, workshops, study trips, exhibitions and seminars will allow students to acquire the knowledge and skills appropriate to the start and the development of the first year of master's degree:

-the attitude to consider architecture as a form of knowledge, as critical thinking, as a tool for understanding reality in the perspective of its virtuous and ethical transformation;

-the ability to know and interpret the physical and social complex contexts with the awareness of the transformation that a new architectural intervention will produce;

-the ability to learn and elaborate the multidisciplinary skills of the compositional and structural  components  besides the  Bim  process and parametric models;

the ability to face the design process of a complex architecture from the conceptualization to the development of all typological, functional, structural and technological aspects;

-the individual capacity of making judgments using multiple criteria in the evaluation of design decisions providing a range of benefits, social values and sustainable costs;

-the ability of communication using the most effective verbal and means of representation in the argument of ideas and design choices in all areas of confrontation and discussion.

Argomenti trattati

In considering the whole of conceptual objectives, compositional choices, construction techniques and forms of representation that constitute that complex system that is the architectural project, it is the strategic choice of the Laboratory to assign to the tool of the section the topical role of generator of the design process.

The section, to be understood simultaneously as an analytic and as well as a projective tool, will be assumed at a dual scale.

At urban scale the section is considered as the privileged instrument for the definition of the form to be assumed by the resolution of the complex relation between the architectural object and the urban context. The section will be the locus of the spatial, structural and programmatic articulation of the fundamental and complex moment of the contact between the building and the ground within the specific morphological and functional conditions of the site.

Alternatively, at the scale of the architectural object, and by means of the analysis of “habitable objects” of different nature and size, the section offers the opportunity for an accurate study directed toward the definition of spatial organizations, structural typologies and syntactic systems able to articulate in a non-banal and passive way the relation between the interior inhabited space and the external environmental context.

In this dual form the tool of the section becomes the moment of determination of the intentional and complex dialectic relation between the designed object and the anthropic environment in which it is inserted, offering at the same time the opportunity of a trans-disciplinary relation between the different agencies converging in the design process.

The Laboratory proposes to the students, organized in group of 2 or 3 individuals, a design experience within areas in Milan affected by the contemporary processes of urban transformation and directed toward the speculation on specific forms of contemporary living.


Laurea (equivalent to Bachelor of Science) in the classes provided for the admission to the MSc.  

Modalità di valutazione

Student activities will be carried out in groups of 2-3 people. The Laboratorio requires continuity in the production of design materials which will be review weekly in the classroom and also via Skype or other digital communication platforms by the Visiting Professor. The work of the design teams will be verify in three phases, marked by intermediate presentations. Each phase corresponds to specific training activities and project advancements and will end with a presentation of the works to the committee formed by all the teachers of the Studio. The professors, together will discuss about the projects, giving students shared suggestions and intermediate evaluations, based on the coherence between pre-established goals and the levels of acquired cultural awareness.

The final exam will be a significant moment of critical argumentation and constructive discussion of the project design, where each student will have to demonstrate:

- ability in the cognitive and interpretative procedures of spatial and cultural contexts.

- in-depth disciplinary knowledge of theories and techniques of complex constructions.

- ability to apply integrated structural, constructive solutions to the expressive and formal choices of architecture.

- methodological coherence throughout the design process, from the conception to its technical and formal development.

- modelling capacity in BIM environment

- ability to argue and critically expose the project through the most effective drawings and models.
