Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The Studio is an 'international field' of theoretical research and advanced experimentation.

The reality, everywhere, asks architecture a thorough cultural and ethical responsibility. Therefore the teaching aims to consolidate disciplinary knowledge and theoretical references, to feed critical attitudes, to induce conscious design choices.  These tools allow to tackle the design of complex new buildings, with awareness of its formal, functional, structural, technological components.

The complexity of the design processes is faced and managed through the interconnection between the teachings of Architectural design, Architectural composition, Structure, Technology and design in BIM environment. The trans-disciplinary approach nourishes rationality and imagination and the possibility of recomposing form, function and construction in unitary visions, bearers of new reasons and meanings.

Lectures, project reviews, workshops, study trips, exhibitions and seminars will allow students to acquire the knowledge and skills appropriate to the start and the development of the first year of master's degree:

-the attitude to consider architecture as a form of knowledge, as critical thinking, as a tool for understanding reality in the perspective of its virtuous and ethical transformation;

-the ability to know and interpret the physical and social complex contexts with the awareness of the transformation that a new architectural intervention will produce;

-the ability to learn and elaborate the multidisciplinary skills of the compositional and structural  components  besides the  Bim  process and parametric models;

the ability to face the design process of a complex architecture from the conceptualization to the development of all typological, functional, structural and technological aspects;

-the individual capacity of making judgments using multiple criteria in the evaluation of design decisions providing a range of benefits, social values and sustainable costs;

-the ability of communication using the most effective verbal and means of representation in the argument of ideas and design choices in all areas of confrontation and discussion.

The future of living space, the needs of societies and places raise urgent and crucial questions that require responsible answers. In depth disciplinary knowledge and innovative theoretical and operational tools are essential for designing architectures responding to structural and constructive adequacy, principles of environmental, economic and aesthetic sustainability; as well as allowing buildings that comply with the requirements of functionality, well-being and wished uses.

‘Contradictions and complexity’ of reality can be tackled by using a multidimensional approach to problems and spatial scales of the architecture. Therefore, the Studio1 faces the challenge of improving the quality of living spaces through projects able to manage situations, programs and aspects of high difficulty, recomposing visions and disciplines that can not be separated but must produce interactions between symbolic –aesthetic representations and structural-technical procedures.

The Studio will address the theme of the Tall Building participating to an International Competition of Architecture.

The aim is to explore, through theoretical foundations and disciplinary researches, a subject so controversial but, at the same time, so widespread everywhere: the tall buildings, that will be designed in this Studio, will be not only spectacular icons, but expression of new coherent synthesis between architectural form, function, structure, techniques and materials in coherence with the needs of social and physical contexts. So, the tall buildings will be responsible towards the environment and demonstrative of constructive and economic feasibility in different, strategic international realities.

Besides, the participation to an international competition will allow students to compete and learn by comparing ideas, methodologies and results within a large architectural debate.


Laurea (equivalent to Bachelor of Science) in the classes provided for the admission to the MSc.  

Modalità di valutazione

Assessment methods and criteria.

Student activities will be carried out in groups of 2-3 people and will be developed in three phases. Each phase corresponds to specific training activities and project advancements and will end with a presentation of the works to the committee formed by all the teachers of the Studio. The professors, together will discuss about the projects, giving students shared suggestions and intermediate evaluations, based on the coherence between pre-established goals and the levels of acquired cultural awareness.

The final exam will be a significant moment of critical argumentation and constructive discussion of the project design, where each student will have to demonstrate:

- ability in the cognitive and interpretative procedures of spatial and cultural contexts.

- in-depth disciplinary knowledge of theories and techniques of complex constructions.

- ability to apply integrated structural, constructive solutions to the expressive and formal choices of architecture.

- methodological coherence throughout the design process, from the conception to its technical and formal development.

- modelling capacity in BIM environment

- ability to argue and critically expose the project through the most effective drawings and models.
