Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The course aims at describing the main problems of degradation of cementitious and ceramic materials as a function of the working environment. The students will be able to make a durability assessment, understanding the degradation mechanisms expected, evaluating the material service life and selecting suitable preventative/repair techniques both in the design phase, and in real structures already subject to degradation.

An insight into advanced ceramic and special glass materials industrial applications will be given, to better understand critical aspects determining materials durability. The students will understand how to increase ceramic materials toughness and extend their service life in high temperature applications by a correct material selection in the given working environment.

Risultati di apprendimento attesi

Lectures, numerical exercises and practical examples will allow the student to:

- define, for each environment, the possible risks of concrete degradation

- understand the mechanisms of rebars corrosion in concrete

- estimate the service life of a concrete structure in a given environment

- understand the causes of degradation and select a proper repair technique for already existing structures

- indicate the main industrial applications of advanced ceramic materials, and correlate them to the specifically relevant materials properties

- learn the toughening mechanisms of advanced ceramics

- understand the mechanisms of ceramics degradation in high temperature applications

- discuss and select a proper advanced ceramic for a specific application

- discuss special glass characteristics for advanced applications (solar control, optical fibers)

Argomenti trattati

The course is taught in the second half of the semester and it deals with the following topics.

Concrete and reinforced concrete degradation. Chemical and physical degradation of concrete based on transport mechanisms inside the material. Rebars corrosion mechanisms in concrete: carbonation and chloride induced corrosion. Effect of the environment (relative humidity, presence of salts). Hydrogen embrittlement of high strength steels. Evaluation of concrete service life by a deterministic approach (the probabilistic approach will be briefly addressed as well). Preventative techniques for concrete degradation. Real structure monitoring and repair.

Advanced ceramics. Brief description of advanced ceramics production techniques. Applications of advanced ceramics, described with reference to the properties required in each specific application field. Toughness of ceramics: methods for improving the material toughness through the production of ceramic matrix composites.

High temperature degradation of advanced ceramics. Mechanisms of degradation of both refractory and structural advanced ceramics. Role of environment temperature and composition. Strategies to extend service life.

Glass. Composition and properties of special glass for solar control and other applications in the built environment: photochromic, electrochromic, thermochromic, liquid crystal glass. Production and working principles of optical fibers. Glass degradation (outline).

NOTE ON BOOKS SUGGESTED: Given the number of different topics presented, the whole program cannot be covered with one single textbook: for this reason, several books are suggested, each of them covering part of the program. For topics related to concrete, Bertolini (in Italian) and Bertolini et al. (in English) are indicated as alternatives the student can choose among. Moreover, students will be provided with slides of all lectures, and notes for selected topics (mainly for ceramic materials engineering).

Prerequisiti

Basic knowledge of principles of concrete technology and ceramic materials properties.

Modalità di valutazione

The evaluation will be carried out by a written exam, carried out in the official exam day.

The written exam consists of open questions (generally 2), numerical exercises (generally 2) and few multiple choice  questions. Aim of the written exam is to verify the student understanding of the corrosion and degradation issues of concrete and ceramics in real working conditions. The ability to apply such knowledge to perform a material selection based on the real application requirements will be verified. At the same time, the written exam will verify the capability to perform a proper assessment, evaluating the residual service life or applying any repair techniques to restore safe working conditions. Only if sufficient (>18/30), the student can improve the final score with an oral exam (optional). The oral exam will be meant to assess the capability of the student to apply the theoretical and practical concepts learned to real cases of evaluation of possible degradation mechanisms and prevention or repair strategies. With the oral, a maximum increase of 3 points can be obtained. If the oral is not satisfactory, the score can be reduced.
