054228 - COMPRESSIBLE FLUID DYNAMICS
Obiettivi dell'insegnamento
The main objective of the course is to introduce the fundamentals of compressible-fluid flows for aerospace applications.
In particular, the theory and the relevant results for compressible-fluid flows are presented for acoustics, the unsteady and steady one-dimensional, quasi-one-dimensional and two-dimensional cases. The fluid thermodynamics includes fluid non-ideality.
Risultati di apprendimento attesi
At the end of the course, the student is expectedto have a solid knowledge on:
- Method of characteristics for hyperbolic scalar equations and systems.
- One-dimensional acoustics.
- One-dimensioal unsetady invisicid flows, including shocks
- Quasi-one-dimenisional steady flows in nozzles
- Two-dimenisioal steady supersonic flows, under both the non-linear and linearized approximation
- Aerodynamics of airfoil in compressible flows
Argomenti trattati
Governing equations and similarity theory. Thermodynamics of motion; Speed of sound and compressibility; Transport properties; Similarity; Rotational flows and dissipation tensor.
One-dimensional flows. Acoustic approximation; Wave equation; Theory of characteristics; Burgers equations; Shock waves; Rankine-Hugoniot relations; Riemann problem of gasdynamics; Quasi-one-dimensional flows in gasdynamics nozzles and engine intakes. Fanno and Rayleigh flows.
Multi-dimensional flows. Crocco’s theorem; Potential flow; Perturbation potential; Similarity theory for sonic, transonic and supersonic flows; Supersonic flows; Transonic flows.
Blended learning activities concern the development of a sofwtare for the numerical solution of the acoutsic equation and of unsetady one-dimenisional inviscid flows.
Flipped class activities regard the method of characteristics for steady two-dimensional flows.

Prerequisiti
The perspective student is expected to have a solid knoledge on fundamentals of fluid mechanics and of aerodynamics in the incompressible regime.
Knowledge on alrogithm programming is preferrable.
Modalità di valutazione
The evaluation is carried out in two steps.
First, the student will undergo a written examination including both questions on thery and exercises. If the written eamination is positivie (grade > 17), an oral examination will follow.
