Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The course will analyze the role and the properties of processes characteristic of the energy sector in the context of the relationship between production of energy and environmental issues.

Risultati di apprendimento attesi

The course will have frontal classes, numerical exercises, and a personal work to be prepared in a computer lab.

Lectures and exercise sessions will allow students to:

  • know and discuss about worldwide data of the energy markets
  • know and discuss about the different fuels
  • know and discuss about the different technologies to produce electricity
  • know and discuss about the different technologies to prevent pollutant emissions in the energy sector
  • analyse energy-related problems form the quantitative point of view, summarizing the results within reports

The project laboratory will allow students to:

  • prepare, present and discuss a presentation on a topic related to energy and environment

Argomenti trattati
  • Energy and environment: energy definition, energy mix, and markets, use of energy, renewable and non-renewable energy sources, local and global pollution (frontal classes, flipped classrooms).
  • Fuels: fossil and alternative fuels, synthetic fuels, hydrogen, biomasses (frontal classes, flipped classrooms).
  • Heat engines, power plants, fuel cells (frontal classes, flipped classrooms).
  • Renewable sources: hydroelectric, solar, wind, geothermic, tide energy and waste incinerators (frontal classes, flipped classrooms).
  • Nuclear energy.
  • Environment: pollutant emission formation, world regulations, technologies for the control of pollutant emissions from energy-related processes (CO, VOC, soot, SOx, NOx) (frontal classes, flipped classrooms).

Part of the course will be taught through flipped classroom: students will be introduced to the learning material before the class, they will have to study it, and then classroom time will be devoted to discuss the topics.

Prerequisiti

Students are required to know the basic principles of mass and energy balances.

Modalità di valutazione

Exams consist in the evaluation of the reports of the numerical exercises and of the personal presentations, while a written exam will assess the knowledge of the contents of the frontal lessons.
