Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The course is aimed at giving the bases of design of protective and environmental structures with specific application to risk mitigation, where soil-structure interaction plays a dominant role. The specific topics are proposed using a consistent geotechnical/structural design approach in the framework of Eurocodes, and taking into accoount durability issues.

Risultati di apprendimento attesi

The purposes are the students’ knowledge of the theoretical issues, capability to perform structural design analyses aimed at risk mitigation intervention for real case studies, capability to present their conclusions. With reference to the European descriptors:

  • Knowledge and understanding (DdD1): knowledge of theories for modelling of soil-structure interaction aimed at performance-based design of interventions.
  • Applying knowledge and understanding (DdD2): ability to select the key-design parameters and to propose the procedure for their determination
  • Communication skills (DdD4): ability to clearly present the conclusions of the designed mitigation intervention.
  • Learning skills (DdD5): ability to autonomously increase knowledge with respect to skills taught during classes.

Argomenti trattati

Design of piles subjected to combined loads. Soil-structure reactions for displacements controlled problems of vertically embedded systems at serviceability and ultimate limit states.

Analysis and design of pipelines and underground structures exposed to risk. Hydraulic intervention measures for hazard mitigation: superficial (trenches) and deep draining systems. Soil-structure reactions for applied displacements of horizontally embedded systems at serviceability and ultimate limit states. Deformation response of the soils in horizontal excavations. Temporary and serviceability load conditions for tunnel segments, detailing.

Analysis and Design of stabilizing structures: ground anchors, sheet-piles, earth-reinforced walls, advanced retaining devices. Evaluating the triggering of a landslide through Limit Equilibrium Approaches (methods of slices; Fellenius, Bishop, Janbu). Structural intervention measures for hazard mitigation: hybrid methods for designing active and passive protective structures (anchored retaining walls, slope stabilizing piles, earth reinforced embankments).

Prerequisiti

Basics of soil mechanics and of engineering models for soil-structure interaction. Basic knowledge on structural mechanics applied to linear members and R/C and steel structure design.

Modalità di valutazione

The exam is oral. The admission to the oral discussion is conditioned to the submission of the design reports assigned during the attendance. The oral exam will start with the discussion of the report choices.
