054142 - RIVER HYDRAULICS FOR FLOOD RISK EVALUATION

Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The course aims at presenting several aspects of river flow modelling, starting from the fundamental equations and then moving to application of computational tools used in engineering practice; focus of the analyses is constantly devoted to flood risk mitigation.

Students learn how simple 1D and 2D models can be applied to represent the natural and/or anthropic complexity of rivers systems. Students will learn to develop numerical tools for the solution of simple cases, as well as to make use of state of the art technical codes in river hydraulics.

Applications span from synthetic simplified examples to real cases.

Risultati di apprendimento attesi

Knowledge and ability in understanding:

  • understand energy and momentum principles in a variety of configurations of river hydraulics
  • model complex configurations in river hydraulics
  • recognize and describe spatial effects of internal discontinuities and boundary conditions in open channel flows

Ability in applying knowledge and understanding:

  • implement simple numerical schemes for the solution of relevant equations in river hydraulics
  • compare different models for the investigation of river hydraulic processes
  • apply knowledge to a real river system (project work)

Making judgments:

  • choose adequate model for river hydraulic processes
  • choose among alternatives for river training aiming at flood risk mitigation
  • sensitivity analysis to parameters and evaluation of robustness of results

Learning ability:

  • managing group work

Argomenti trattati
  • introduction to river hydraulics: revision of key concepts
  • basics of steady open channel flows (steady, constant discharge): prismatic channels, non prismatic channels
  • open channel flow with variable discharge
  • energy losses
  • compound channels
  • unsteady flow
  • two-dimensional modelling

Prerequisiti

Fundamentals of fluid mechanics and open channel flows

Modalità di valutazione

During the course students will develop a number of assignments on a variety of realistic and real configurations for open-channel systems (individual or group work). Exam consists of an individual oral discussion of assignments; on the basis of the theoretical background student motivates modelling choises and comments results.
