The course aims at giving the tools to address the issues of contaminated sites, with particular reference to chemical pollution in soil, subsoil, and groundwater. The main goal is to enable students to approach properly site characterization, to evaluate and design proper management and intervention strategies according to the site-specific conditions, and to design remediation actions for reclamation.

Lectures and exercise sessions (performed working in pairs of students or in a team) will allow students to:
Get the fundamentals about pollutant behavior in soil, subsoil, and groundwater, and make previsions about that by using simplified mathematical models;
Perform human health and environmental risk assessment in order to estimate the risk due to pollutants in soil, subsoil, and groundwater, and to calculate the acceptable remediation target limits according to the site-specific conditions;
Know principles, terminology, and the designing approach for the remediation technologies dealt with in the course;
Select the proper remediation approach at a site, based on the pollutants present and their location, site geology and hydrogeology, the expected risks, the site-specific constraints in terms of logistic, remediation duration and costs;
Process data from lab tests or pilot scale tests in order to get the parameter values necessary to design the remediation actions at a contaminated site.
The topics covered by the course include the behavior of chemicals in soils and groundwater, site characterization, risk assessment and remediation techniques. In detail, the following topics are dealt with:
1. Soil phases: definitions and relationships among properties 2. General equations and simplified models to describe water flow in the unsaturated and the saturated soil zone 3. General equations and simplified models to describe air flow in the unsaturated soil zone 4. Pollutants of concern: physical and chemical properties, and resulting behavior in soil, subsoil and groundwater 5. General equations and simplified models to describe the fate and transport of pollutants dissolved in the soil water and as a vapor in the soil gas 6. Italian regulation 7. Characterization and monitoring of soil, subsoil, groundwater and soil gas: approaches, tools, procedures 8. Chemical analyses of soil, groundwater and gaseous samples 9. Site-specific risk assessment 10. Remediation technologies: basic concepts and selection criteria 11. Chemical-physical remediation technologies for soils (solidification/stabilization, soil washing, soil vapor extraction) 12. Bioremediation of unsaturated soils (biopile, bioventing) 13. Chemical-physical remediation technologies for groundwater (air sparging, permeable reactive barriers, in situ chemical oxidation) 14. Bioremediation of groundwater (biosparging, biobarriers, aerobic or anaerobic enhanced bioremediation) 15. Light non-aqueous phase liquid (interaction with soil, recovery)
The course deals with topics concerning the UN Sustainable Development Goal number 15 (Sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, halt biodiversity loss) (SDG 15).
Students are required to have knowledge of math, physics, chemistry, geology, hydrology, and hydrogeology, as taught in the courses delivered for the Bachelor Degrees in the School of Civil, Environmental and Land Management Engineering at Politecnico di Milano or at equivalent level.
Modalità di valutazione
The first part of the exam consists of a written screening test (multiple choice answers) about theoretical and numerical questions. Students passing this first test are then allowed to perform the oral part of the exam, which covers both the theoretical and the numerical topics of the course.
The exam mark is based only on the oral colloquium.
In case of failure at any exam session, the student is required to repeat the written screening test in the following sessions.
