Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The Digital Innovation Lab aims at putting students in touch with innovation techniques and strategies for real-world problems, so as to open their minds towards facing hot and unsolved issues. The course develops across three activities: group work on a business case provided by the teacher, in-class interactive activities, and direct teaching classes. The Business case is the core of the course, where students will work on an innovation idea from the field study to its conception and design. The business case can be the conceptualisation of a new product, the definition and assessment of a new service, or the solution of an organizational problem.

This Lab is a training arena where students will learn the basic innovation techniques, mainly focused on user-cantered design and data-driven innovation. The students will apply the concepts they learn on digital innovation practical cases throughout the course.

Given specific project cases, students will be able to apply the studied techniques in practice for:

  • Studying the user needs
  • Characterizing an innovation offer
  • Specifying the innovation value and features for different stakeholders
  • Propose a possible prototype or proof-of-concept of data-driven innovation solution

Making judgements

Given specific project cases, students will be able to: 

  • Analyze and understand the goals, assumptions and requirements associated with the user needs
  • Learn how to address conflicts and constraints on the solutions
  • Take decisions over the solutions to adopt and how to increase their added value
  • Propose a possible strategy for prototype or proof-of-concept design


Students will learn to:

·       Write a user-centered specification document

·       Write a high-level innovation proposal

·       Present their work in front of their colleagues during project labs

·       Propose a possible prototype or proof-of-concept of data-driven innovation solution

Lifelong learning skills

Students will be able to:

  • Understand how and where innovation is needed
  • Determine the needs and profile of potential customers
  • Design the innovative solutions that fit and fulfil these needs
  • Validate the impact of the solutions
  • Understand how innovation can be leveraged and implemented through to the development of innovative business models, the creation of new forms of partnership, the exploitation of new product and process technologies
  • Develop a real project that is addressing the above aspects, by defining and applying a comprehensive plan, following the implementation to selected solutions and evaluating short and long term impacts
  • Implementing small proof of concepts based on the business ideas and opportunities pursued
  • Work in a multi-objective and multi-stakeholder context

Argomenti trattati

The topics covered by the course span: design thinking, user entered design, personas, user journey, data-driven innovation, process reengineering, innovation canvases, innovation workshop techniques, product and service design, business model design, data-driven innovation and data science applied to business cases (specifically, with examples of machine learning and data analysis implementation).




Prerequisites include knowledge of software engineering practices (requirement specification, design), software architectures and basic Web-based software implementation skills.  

Modalità di valutazione

The evaluation is based on a project work activity to be developed in groups along the course. It will cover all the innovation steps and techniques presented in class through theory and use cases. Students can submit the project only once, with intermediate submission steps during the course.
