Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The course objective is to apply the theoretical skills acquired during the study programme on a real system, facing and analysing the related issues. The course covers the aspects related to the design and development of an automated system, in terms of mechanical/electrical/pneumatic/hydraulic system modelling, selection and positioning of sensors for control loop closure, selection of suitable control logics, control-system modelling, numerical simulation and experimental implementation of the control system on a real plant, verification and validation of models and control logic performances. The topics are treated by means of numerical and experimental applications through a team project work.

Argomenti trattati

Methodologies for automated system modelling. Schematisation levels: selection criteria on the basis of the system typology, of the operating conditions, of the working frequency range. Simulation environments.

1. Process simulation and control. Design of process control systems alternatively for the level regulation of coupled tanks or for temperature control of an heat-flow system. Modelling of the systems and linear approximation for control, selection and positioning of the sensors for control loops closure, selection of suitable control logics, compilation of the simulation models for the system to be controlled and for the control system, accounting for the dynamic aspects that may reduce the closed-loop performances (couplings, non-linearities, actuation delays), dynamic simulation in open and closed loop, possible redesign for maximising the system performances.

2. Electrical drives.Survey of electrical drives' components and of of electrical machines' and static converters' performances, definition of DC and AC electrical drives' structure. Experimental evaluation of the issues related with electrical actuators' control, by using standard industrial components and/or open an programmable systems.

3. Discrete event systems.  Modeliling and control of discrete event systems. Definition of PLC structure and programming languagesLaboratory experiences on programmable logic controllers (PLCs), field buses and pneumatic circuits.

4. Active control of mechanical systems. Modelling, testing and optimisation of control systems for motion control and vibration control of mechanical systems with lumped and distributed flexibility. Mechanical system modelling, selection of the sensor position, of the actuation system and of the control law. 


At the beginning of the course the students will be divided in small teams (3-4 persons). A single laboratory experience, to be carried out during all the course duration, will be assigned to each team. The attendance to laboratory hours is mandatory. During laboratory hours teachers will support the teams in the development of the experiences, orienting the work progress.




  • System dynamics and modelling (mechanical, electrical, process)

  • Fundamentals of control engineering (Classical control theory, PID regulators)
  • Automatic control and process control (Modern control – state observers – pole placement and optimal control)
  • Industrial Automation/Informatics (Discrete event systems, digital control – PLC – PID controller design)

Modalità di valutazione

The final exam is made of the evaluation of a technical report and a final presentation to the whole classroom of the project work.
In the technical report and during the presentation the students shall demonstrate to:

  • have properly modelled the experience assigned to the team
  • have performed experiments and identified needed parameters
  • have validated the devoloped model/s
  • have designed, tuned and implemented different control algorithms
  • be able to critically analyse numerical and experimental results and control performances

During the course the teams are required to perform a short mid-term presentation to the classroom and should demonstrate the ability to summarise and analyse the work progress and preliminary results.

The final evaluation will also take into account the student approach to the project work and to the team activities during the laboratory hours.
