The course aims to provide knowledge, methods and instruments that represents the basis to the management of the built environment and real estate functions. Students will be guided in learning about typological characteristics of buildings, distribution of space, functional and construction aspects of buildings in order to acquire the skills needed to analyze and manage different types of buildings.
The course is based on lectures, tutorials and guided tours. Lectures examine the concept of “building type” with particular attention to the residential buildings, office buildings and buildings for production and trade. The analysis of building types is carried out through the description of the “history” of type, the main characteristics of the type (elementary typological form, size, relationship between the building and the urban context, etc..), the functional and distribution aspects, structural types and some examples. The program also provides guided tours to some buildings representative of the building types learned during the course.
Lectures will also cover regulatory aspects (national or municipal regulations, hygiene regulations; compliance with the rules for access to the building for disabled people; fire safety, etc..). In the tutorial activities, students will be guided through the “reading” of each building type with respect to all aspects described above. The course consists of two learnig by doing activities:
