Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The goal of the teaching is the learning of the architectural design fundamentals, of the theoretical, analytical, historical and instrumental knowledge that allows getting to the design synthesis through the definition of architectural form, and to its representation through the drawing tool, expressive mode of the discipline. Student learns judgment and control of the quality of spaces and volumes in the different phases of the project, from conception to its formal definition, through the study of the relationship with site, urban history, functions, construction techniques and chosen materials.

The studio works, in the two sections coordinated with each other, on the field of study of Palazzo Ducale in Mantova, have a timetable that includes also an experience of two weeks of intensive teaching. The results of the studio are aimed at preparing the final degree work.

The Final Workshop composes a module of Architectural Design, 4 cfu, a module of Exhibition Design, 4 cfu, a module of Architectural Preservation, 4 cfu, and a module of Strenghtening and Seismic Design, 4 cfu. Both sections of the Final Workshop Antico e Nuovo adopt the innovative teaching methods, in terms of joint supervision (co-tutela) with Palazzo Ducale of Mantova.

The student acquires practical skills through the performance of laboratory activities.

After passing the exam, the student: understands the characteristics, needs and constraints of the design process in the built heritage; plans the recovery and re-functionalization of parts of a monumental complex; with independent judgment, is able to operate and communicate the design choices made.

Argomenti trattati

The teaching provides for the close coordination of four disciplinary modules on a common project.

In the teaching integration of Architectural Design students are engaged in the development of an architectural design experience that faces the issue of the redesign of urban space and the complete defining of an architectural structure, developed with the tools necessaries to the representation of space (sketches, maquette, digital design) to detail scale. Topic of the workshop is the study and the redesign of an architectural part, grafted into the historical complex of Palazzo Ducale, its functioning with a new use, its relationship with the nearby urban spaces.

Workshop takes place in classroom and in the city, and is organized with lectures, practice and design activities, with regular reviews of the project. Lectures and practices are set to frame the problematic and disciplinary aspects of architecture, studying the rules of urban form, showing case studies and related typologies to stimulate and support the design process in the various phases of setting and development.

The teaching integration of Architectural Preservation offers an overview of the theoretical assumptions and operational aspects of architectural heritage preservation in the integrated dimension of restoration and enhancement. Starting from understanding the complexity of issues and values through the knowledge of the building and the restoration/reutilization project, the course addresses conservation as a methodological and operational synthesis on historical buildings. The workshop will deal with operational aspects of the conservation project starting from actual situations related to the Palazzo Ducale in Mantova and to its enhancement issues. The teaching adopt the innovative teaching method of joint supervision (co-tutela) with Palazzo Ducale of Mantova.

The teaching integration of Exhibition Design focalise on that specific discipline that relates itself to the surrounding space in order to create exhibition events for the fruition of real cultural narratives, by a wide and heterogeneous public. The interpretation of the architectural environmental components and the configuration of the functional exhibition equipment, considered both as autonomous elements and as complex and interconnected devices, are aimed at conceptualizing and designing innovative relationship systems, where the problems related to the enhancement and dissemination of the artistic heritage and cultural activities must make accessible and comprehensible the historical, artistic, narrative and participatory value of the exhibition itself. Therefore, some selected internal environments of Palazzo Ducale of Mantova, will host innovative exhibition structures able, with their narrative value, to "repopulate" the Palazzo itself.

The teaching integration of Strenghtening and Seismic Design will provide the knowledge to evaluate the safety level of historical building and to perform the most suitable structural strengthening of historical buildings. The module will address the following topics: construction historical materials, diagnostic survey, and strengthening techniques. On the other hand, the module will also focus on the nature of earthquakes and seismic hazard, the effects of earthquakes on buildings, the issues of seismic in architectural design and the principle for seismic design with a review about past, present and future of seismic design approach, the evaluation and retrofit of historic existing buildings, and also ordinary building. 


An examination recording priority established by the Regulations of the Master's of Science program in Architectural Design and History for attending the Final Workshop Antico e Nuovo is the passing of the two Studios in the first and second semester of the 1st year of the Master of Science.

The pre-requisites for the attendance of the teaching are those of the experience of the project of a building or building complex on an urban scale and the study of forms of insertion into the urban fabric of historical matrix, acquired through the achievement of the bachelor in architecture. A prerequisite is also the ability to work in a multi-person and multi-cultural design group.

Modalità di valutazione

The practical and operative work of analysis and design, carried out in multi-cultural teams of four students, for which presence is mandatory, will be verify by work-in-progress reviews in classroom. Time and mode are explained in a timetable starting from the first day of the course. The workshop includes intermediate exercises in the form of individual ex-tempore exercises.

The final assessment of workshop report is the exam - group and individual, written and oral, depending on the modules - of the activities performed in the project workshop. Students must present and discuss the drawings of their project and demonstrating the learning of theoretical and methodological contents proposed. The student must show to possess: ability to organize knowledge discursively; critical reasoning ability on the project realized and on the work in team; effectiveness and linearity of the exposure with the correct terms of each discipline.

In detail:

For Architectural Design, the exam is an individual interview. The student must bring the printed tables of the project carried out in a team and the personal sketches made during the semester. During the interview the student will be asked to draw free-hand architectures of reference, of Mantova or elsewhere, and parts of the project. The interview aims to assess the degree of preparation and personal knowledge of the student in the field of architectural design.

For Architectural Preservation, as an output of the knowledge of the building through the workshop, will be produced a book (printed A3 format) related to the restoration project (knowledge phase). Are also required drawings and reports referring to the materic survey, construction survey and building decay status. Each student should be able to comment on the different phases of the restoration project.

For Exhibition Design the students, organized in team, will have to develop both curatorial project proposals (research/analysis/synthesis phase of the exhibition contents and identification of a dedicated “narrative script”) and exhibit project (conceptual and design synthesis phase, and layout of the single involved environments). The project, deepened at different architectural scales (from general organization to selected detail), must represent, with clarity and adequate graphic representation, the general concept of the project, the curatorial and narrative structure and the overall and detailed exhibit solutions, inserted in their architectural context. The exam will be carried out with the evaluation of the the project (a printed A3 format book and maquettes): each students group should be able to comment on the different phases of the exhibit project.

For Strenghtening and Seismic Design the students have to develop by their own and present in written form one or two assignments that will be provided during the module on the sismic design and the structural strengthening of historical buildings.
