Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The goal of the Studio is the learning of the architectural design fundamentals, of the theoretical, analytical, historical and instrumental knowledge that allows getting to the design synthesis through the definition of architectural form, and to its representation through the drawing tool, expressive mode of the discipline.

The interest of the Studio is the application on the historical city context, through the teaching of international professors in the discipline of the architectural project. Student learns design skills, judgment and control of the quality of spaces and volumes in the different phases of the project, from conception to its formal definition, through the study of the relationship with site, urban history, functions, construction techniques and chosen materials.

Both sections of the Studio adopt the innovative teaching methods, in terms of flipped-blended classroom.

The Studio give the acquisition of practical skills, through the development of laboratory activities, coordinated between the two sections.

After passing the exam, the student: understands the characteristics, needs and constraints of the design process in a context of historical matrix; plans the architectural transformation intervention of places closely linked to the historical fabric and to monumental buildings; in independent judgment, demonstrates the ability to operate and communicate the design choices made.

Argomenti trattati

This Architectural Design Studio, held by Prof. Barbara Bogoni and Prof. Eduardo Souto de Moura, is coordinated and integrated with the parallel Studio by Prof. Angelo Lorenzi with the participation of prof. Joao Luis Carrilho da Graça. Prominent Italian and international scholars, professors, researchers and tutors are also contributing.
The Studio deals with the complexity of designing areas for common living in strict relation to built and non-built outside space in a historical urban centre by tackling different academic aspects: structure of the composition and type of construction, urban morphology and relations to built space, relationships between form and content, architectural composition and spacial distribution, technology.

Students will be asked to develop an elaborate project in an international setting, that aims to redevelop a vast urban site located in the city centre. Such site is denoted by morphologically and orographically complex features which originate from adding and connecting buildings in different time frames and from adapting buildings to ground unevenness.

The purpose of the project is to develop themes and languages strictly related to the surrounding historical buildings. Continuity with the history of the area must be maintained and the transformation of the environment must take into account the citizens needs and must be coherent with contemporary language and, at the same time, it must respect the cultural and urban orientation of the city. It must also respect its history, urban morphology and those elements which constitute its identity.
The programme includes designing areas for modern private and collective functions.

The project will be developed by both working teams and single students on the urban and building scale, up to the construction detail.

An international committee will evaluate the projects.


The pre-requisites for the attendance of the teaching are those of the experience of the project of a building or building complex on an urban scale and the study of forms of insertion into the urban fabric of historical matrix, acquired through the achievement of the bachelor in architecture. A prerequisite is also the ability to work in a multi-person and multi-cultural design group.

Modalità di valutazione

Students will be asked to carry on complementary activities individually, outside workshop hours. These activities will mainly involve completing the tasks assigned in class and will be proportioned by the university to the workshop activities.
Students are also required to show a specific interest in research and in the critical elaboration of the themes offered for discussion and to be able to use extremely complex design instruments.
Students are required to actively and continually take part into the every-day activities as scheduled and to the lectures of international architects invited for Mantovarchitettura International Festival.
The operational method will involve ongoing practical work on the project, architectural research and constant collaboration with professors, tutors and workshop students. 
Students will develop designs, on paper and digitally, and 3D models.
