The teaching provides students with the skills for the definition of a structural concept and the design of the elements that are part of it, based on the main construction materials nowadays used, including reinforced concrete, steel, timber and masonry, in the specific context of the historical heritage.
The teaching will address the following topics: definition of the loads acting on the structures; beam theory and force method for the calculation of statically indeterminate structures, calculation of internal forces and stresses; design and verification of the structural elements and connections. The statistical characterization of the variables involved will also be shown. The ultimate goal of the teaching is to provide students with the knowledge needed to develop a project also from a structural point of view.

After passing the exam, the student: understands the functioning of the construction systems in relation to technology and materials (wood, masonry, steel, reinforced concrete) that characterize the intervention in the built heritage; is able to select the principles useful for obtaining solutions to static problems in the intervention on built heritage; is able to manage with autonomy of judgment the problems not strictly related to the problems faced in the teaching assuming motivated decisions.

The statistical characterization of the variables involved will also be shown. The ultimate goal of the course is to provide students with the knowledge needed to develop a project also from a structural point of view.
The course is organized in lectures, once a week and it includes theoretical lectures, exercises and design tasks.
A basic knowledge of statically determinate structural systems and sectional analysis is required. However, a recall on some basic knowledge will be provided in the course.
Modalità di valutazione
For all students (regularly attending the course or not), evaluation will be based on the solution of some design tasks and on a final oral exam. Regarding the design tasks, the student will be assessed with respect to both the procedures adopted and the correctness of the results obtained. During the oral exam, the student must show the ability to critically discuss the results of the design tasks assigned, with adequate clarity, using the appropriate formalism and terminology of the discipline.
