Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The Studio proposes an experience in architectural design facing the proper complexity of the process. Contextual, typological, functional, constructive, expressive and formal issues of the architectural design process will be treated in their mutual relationship and interaction. The design is challenged to critically appreciate ongoing transformations in real contexts and propose appropriate solutions.

To achieve this goal students are guided: in a first phase, in the comprehension of the context of the project, in the evaluation of the alternative approaches proposed for the case study area in public debates, and in the appreciation of the relations between buildings and urban structure; in a second phase, in a research of experimental building types and forms able to combine compositional questions with design and technical aspects of the building.

The aim of the teaching is the elaboration of the design of a building facing the questions referring to the urban scale as to the detail scale, considering formal, technical, material and functional issues in their mutual relations.

Urban development projects involve the identification and comparison of different alternatives based on multiple objectives and criteria. The complexity of this kind of decisions calls for an evaluation framework able to integrate information on effects and impacts of the design alternatives under investigation, with values and preferences of stakeholders. Multicriteria analysis (MCA) offers such a framework and it is increasingly used in combination with several evaluation techniques. Given these premises, the goal of the course Multicriteria Analysis and Project Appraisal is to provide students with theoretical principles and methodologies for projects sustainability (economic, social and environmental) evaluation.

Innovative Teaching:

Flipped and blended actions

Risultati di apprendimento attesi

Students:

- acquire knowledge and understanding of the techniques and tools for architectural design;

- are capable of facing a critical approach to all necessary scales of an architectural design with advanced levels of specialisation and detail;

- are capable of facing a critical analysis of locations and contexts in the close relationship between building and city, technique and function of architecture;

- are capable of developing design solutions coherent with the location and context, even in highly complex urban environments

The renewal of learning spaces: the school as a common contemporary space between architecture and landscape.

The core of the Architectural Design Studio 1 is the renewal architectural project of the existing public schools and relative appraisal. The Public School is intended to be like learning space that should became an updated center for an Educational Community. The course is grafted into the research programme titled "A Shared School. For a culture of happiness" which won the New Generation Competition for the fight against child educational poverty. It is an interdisciplinary research project of construction and experimentation of a teaching model for the Public School that provides for the renewal of learning spaces and community spaces. Architectural Design Studio 1 proposes to experiment an Open and Spread School project through the integration with the city in which the activities carried out within the school, and through the application of a didactic model oriented toward the wellbeing of children as self-realization process. The project will be carried out inside and outside the schools that will be selected, in the contexts of both formal and non-formal education, favoring an idea of the School as a recognizable place with a specific identity, a democratic place of growth, theater of encounters, exchange and enrichment where to experiment interesting relationships. The spaces dedicated to young people will be at the service of a new way of thinking about school.
The scholastic heritage - starting from some sample cases - will be updated through an architectural project of renewal of open and built spaces. A project for a new design of the common spaces regulated with the sense of belonging of the children, of the teachers, of the parents, in and to the school. The aim is to define a solid relationship between the school and children: an architectural project capable of giving new recognition, to offer interdisciplinary perspectives where social criticality, marginalization and sometimes violence seem to prevail. The redesign of the spaces such as garden, trees, play ground, canteens, places of welcome and paths, but also the analysis of solar geometries and the proposal of new shading systems for the open and internal spaces of the school, will be the object of experimentation design of the students.
During the design experience the students will cross different scales, times and fields. The Studio  will deal with the matters of landscape, of shapes in space as well as the re-design of single existing building. The path will be divided into three steps corresponding to three common reviews:

  1. Layers and sequences. This step looks at promoting local transformations able to build a connected series of landscapes. The process will start with the visit of the school and the context highlighting the critical places and their potentiality. The students will look into a design approach focused on the experience of the space and of the surroundings landscape, realising the proposal of a 'narration' able to touch some main points of a new path through the city.
  2. Design strategy. The ideas developed during the first step will be guided toward defining a principle of interference with the common ground of the city. The object of work is the re-design of an existing school involved in the architectural and urban transformation of the settlement.
  3. Focus on details. The third phase is oriented on the elements of architecture, materials and design of open spaces. Within this phase we will focus on the renewal of the interior/exterior spaces of the school. This phase is interpreted as a complex organism, dynamic, open, oriented to the circulation of the scientific and humanistic knowledge. Therefore, the school will be intended as a vital organism focused on the relationship between the architectural construction and the external spaces, between individuals and collective places, among open, covered and indoor space.

The complexity of the elements involved in the project calls for an assessment framework able to integrate information on effects and impacts of the design option discovering each phase of the appraisal procedure. Considering the different scales with which the project engages, MULTI-CRITERIA ANALYSIS AND PROJECT APPRAISAL proposes an exploratory and applicative review of appraisal framework designed to handle different types of project, to arrive at the choice and application of a project sustainability assessment tool (i.e. economic, social and environmental appraisal). Course activities include: theoretical lessons, case studies discussion, development and revision of group projects.

Modalità di valutazione

The evaluation will be carried out in the discussion of the group projects (maximum 3 students per group) taking into account the quality of the project developed and the ability of the student to present it with reference to the topics and themes dealt with in the Studio. The final assessment will be determined by the contents of the project, by the candidates' exhibition capacity and by the student's work through all the Studio, including correctness and completeness of the final projects’ report of MCA and Project Appraisal; ability to critically analyse the final project appraisal’s results, active participation during lectures and revision sessions; clarity of exposure and appropriateness of language. Attendance in class is mandatory.
