053216 - EARTHQUAKE RESISTANT DESIGN AND ADVANCED MATERIALS FOR STRUCTURAL REHABILITATION
The objective of the course is to prepare students in two areas, namely the seismic safety of structures and the use of advanced materials in structural rehabilitation, that may be profitably integrated, responding to the general learning objectives of the Master programme related to the understanding and practice of multi-disciplinary design, to the acquisition of performance modelling skills and to the knowledge of innovative building technologies. The two modules have been coordinated in terms of contents and applications, for a broad vision of advanced techniques in the field of structures.
The earthquake resistant design module aims specifically at providing concepts and basic experience for the seismic analysis and design of new buildings and an introduction to the seismic strengthening of existing ones. Also in connection with this last aspect, the module on structural rehabilitation of buildings aims at providing the student with cutting-edge knowledge on innovative retrofitting methodologies.
Risultati di apprendimento attesi
- knows and understands the methodologies for the seismic analysis of structures, for the seismic design of new buildings, for the general strengthening and for the seismic strengthening of existing buildings, with particular focus on advanced materials and technologies
- is able to apply such knowledge both on the design of new buildings and in the strengthening interventions on existing buildings
Earthquake Resistant Design (ERD)
1) Origin and characteristics of earthquakes; seismicity and zonation; effects of ground motion on constructed facilities;
2) Single and multiple degree of freedom dynamics; response spectrum analysis of framed structures;
3) Post-elastic behaviour of buildings; ductility;
4) Behaviour factor and design spectrum;
5) General design criteria for new buildings (capacity design, code-compliant analysis and checking of framed systems)
6) Design criteria and detailing for reinforced concrete, steel and masonry buildings;
7) Seismic vulnerability of existing buildings and criteria for their strengthening;
8) Basic concepts of seismic isolation.
Applications developed in the course concern the dynamic and response spectrum analysis of buildings with framed structure or with walls. During the course the students, divided in groups, will develop a term project with the seismic design of a framed reinforced concrete structure and the detailing of some of its members (column, beam and node) according to National and International codes (Eurocode 8).
This module has been coordinated with the module on structural rehabilitation of buildings in terms of contents and applications; for a broad vision of currently applied techniques. Point 7) will cover mainly traditional methods while the module on rehabilitation will focus primarily on fibre reinforcement and new materials.
Rehabilitation of Buildings (RB)
The techniques for the strengthening and rehabilitation of buildings made with reinforced concrete, steel or masonry are presented. Particular attention will be given to the use of fiber reinforced composites (FRP) to repair and strength r.c. structures. The methods included in the Italian Guidelines CNR-DT200 to design the FRP reinforcements will be presented. Some examples of applications will be discussed and compared to other international codes (ACI) both for r.c. structures and damaged masonry buildings.
The students will be invited to produce a project to reinforce a r.c. structure using FRPs and the Italian Guidelines CNR-DT200. The r.c. frame studied in the “Earthquake design” course can be adopted.
The project must be presented in a short report (15-20 pgg) and will be the main item of the oral discussion during the exam.
Undergraduate level knowledge of structural mechanics and strength of materials
Modalità di valutazione
For theEarthquake Resistant Design module, the exam aims at verifying that the student has acquired the basic knowledge necessary for seismic design and is in condition to apply it responsibly in the development of a project. The exam will cover the whole program developed during the course with
1) an individual written test, consisting in a set of open-answer questions and fast-solution problems, and
2) a group discussion of the term project.
The grade will be assigned on the basis of both these parts (approximately in equal parts).
For the Structural Rehabilitation module, the exam will be mainly a discussion based on the report presented for the project, with some questions on the theoretical aspects on which the project has been based.
The final joint grade for the modules on Earthquake Resistant Design and Structural Rehabilitation of Buildings will be the weighted average (3/4 and 1/4) of the respective grades.
