Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The Landcape Design Studio aims at defining and experimenting (at the different scales at which Landscape Architecture works) categories, instruments and strategies to describe, interpret and transform open spaces and landscapes, in their natural and anthropological components, also in relation to the historical transformations and to the social-economic and territorial context to which they belong.

The studio problematizes issues of orientation and experience, scale and pattern, topographic form, climatic and vegetative influences, and varied ecological processes that help define open spaces, in urban and natural context. In the center of the sequence of design studios along the master program, the course helps students develop spatial literacy and proficiency in diverse modes of inquiry in landscape architecture.

The course of Geomorphology and Physical Geography is integrated to the studio with the aim of providing the fundamental knowledges in order to reach coherent and workable design choices in relation to the geological substratum as well as in relation to the the vegetation structure of the site

Innovative teaching: coordinated with the 2 sections of Landscape Design Studio (S. Protasoni and H. Pessoa); the Course Topics in Landscape Architecture History and Theory; the IC Landscape Representation and Modeling

Shared supervision between Politecnico and Coldiretti Piacenza

The learning activities proposed:

- make possible the interaction with the world of production, thanks to the involvement of Coldiretti, the leading organization of farmers at national and European level, which will share access to a robust on-line regulatory and technical information system on agricultural production

- are based on the involvement of the students and their interaction with other class mates as well as with the professor and assistants

- develop the ability of the students to work in groups and to participate in public debates with institutional interlocutors

- experiment, in the design experience, innovative tools regarding the investigation, description and representation of the territory

- thanks to the use of online tools shared with Coldiretti, students  will be able to manage the timing, place and rhythm of the learning process

Risultati di apprendimento attesi

- acquire knowledge and understanding of the techniques and tools for landscape design;

- are capable of facing a critical approach to all necessary scales of a landscape design with advanced levels of specialisation and detail;

- are capable of facing design problems where soil, terrain, geology, mineral resources, climate, water, plants, wildlife, and living systems interactions are major drivers;

- acquire high levels of understanding of design research, strategic thinking, technical resolution and graphic expression.

Argomenti trattati

Landscape Architecture works with elements which belong both to nature and culture, structure and image, space and form, earth. They are always at the same time images and concrete materials, representations and objects themselves. In this approach, which refers to the European Landscape Convention (Florence 2000), the Landscape Architecture works mainly as the project and the construction of a place where natural and artificial objects interweave spatial relationships – articulated in terms of quality and quantity – which are able to establish orders and hierarchies in the environment. In this perspective, the scientific discipline of the topographical surveying of the land (Hystorical Geography and Anthropo-geography) works together with a sort of poetic approach which refers to the neverending process of re-inscription (between nature and culture) which provides the environmental system through the time with values and meanings for its inhabitants. In this approach, Landscape Architecture is intended as the set of actions that trigger transformation processes according to dynamics and geographies that are often unpredictable. This leads us to the contemporary idea of a multi-scalar, multidisciplinary project-process aimed at a multiplicity of different actors; idea whch engages the most interesting experiences of contemporary landscape design.

In the studio, the design work will focus on the theme LANDSCAPE FOR WINE _ WINE FOR LANDSCAPE. Today the wine-growing areas represent at the highest level the deep and ancient technical and cultural relationship between man and the environment: the cultivation techniques, the management of the fields, the relationship between property and work and the units involved in the cultivation of these crops, have modified the agricultural landscapes over the centuries, providing them the current structure and image. The position, the morphology (e.g. slope, altitude, etc.), the climate, the dynamic characteristics of the soil are the main natural elements that contribute directly to the qualitative expression of a wine.

The design research proposed in the studio is aimed is at defining strategies to enhance the precious cultural wine-growing landscape, for a sustainable development able to combine agriculture, production and tourism. Strategies that will serve as a background for interventions of landscape architecture at different scales, from the territory to spaces and architectural devices not only necessary for the cultivation and production of wine, but effective to enhance and make perceivable the beauty of the landscape.

Modalità di valutazione

The attendance of the lessons ex cathedra, the presentation of the progress of the project experimentation and the participation to the seminars are compulsory.

The final exam consists in the assessment of the project and in general of  the works carried out during the semester, as well as in the verification of the students' awareness on a theoretical-critical level, with particular reference to the contents developed in the laboratory and to the texts suggested.
