Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

In the Thematic Studio - with a disciplinary characterization with respect to Architectural Design, Environmental Technology Design, Conservation, Interior Architecture or Urban Planning - the student experiments in-depth study of topics related to innovative and advanced research issues in the specific disciplinary area of reference.

According to the Dublin Descriptors (DdD), passing the exam certifies the acquisition of the following results:

DdD 1 knowledge and understanding

- knowledge of advanced tools for the project.

DdD 2 ability to apply knowledge and understanding

- advanced ability to transfer theoretical and technical disciplinary knowledge in project development.

DdD 3 (autonomy of judgment), 4 (communication skills) and 5 (learning ability)

- ability to operate and communicate independently the design choices made (DdD 3, 4 and 5).

Argomenti trattati


The topic of the Studio is the conservation and management of historic Units, with special focus on gardens and parks. Usually, they are historic properties composed by many elements: palaces, service buildings, fornitures, gardens and wider landscape context; That elements are linked each other in a ‘unit’. They could be public or private, open to the public or not open, used as historic value and valorised or only used as public spaces and degraded.

The case study is Monza Park, the main part of the historic unit “Royal Villa, Gardens and Park of Monza”, close to Milano.

The aim is to analyse the state of conservation, the uses and the potentialities and opportunities for the valorisation of the Park; to propose new ideas for its uses and management for the next decades.

Some information regarding the current situation: 

The owners of the Royal Villa Unit are some local public administrations (Lombardy Region, Monza Municipality, Milano Municipality, Central State): currently, they are working for a strategy to conserve and enhance the Unit.

An international competition “A new lease of Life for the Royal Villa in Monza” has been recently promoted by Triennale di Milano and Camera di Commercio di Milano, Monza, Brianza, Lodi): it is still open for architects and other experts. Another international competition will be shortly promoted by Lombardy Region and public administrations for a long term strategy to valorize and well manage the place.

 Many local and non local stakeholders are involved in many valorisation activities (local population, cultural associations, public schools and Universities); other stakeholders are proposing different options. There are many contradictions: the park is strongly used by local population as public space for recreational purposes; it contains some important structures like the well known “Autodromo di Monza” for Formula 1 races and  an international Golf course; some areas of the park are managed as productive farms, that has been one of the most important inherited activity and is an historic characteristic of this type of parks.  

General aims and Criteria for the project  and Knowledge support by teachers:

The development of the Project is based on the international and Italian Conservation approaches for historic properties and gardens preservation and valorisation (ICOMOS-IFLA Charte of Historic Gardens 1982 and Italian Charte on Historic Gardens 1981). It involves all the elements of the unit (buildings and vegetal architectures). Lessons and supports will provide basic knowledge on: Conservation Theories both in general and for historic gardens; the concept and the practice of Management Plans (UNESCO model as basic reference) as specific tool to manage transformations, uses and valorisation of this type of Historic Units and of gardens.

 The Students are invited to propose effective ideas and tools considering the current situation of the Park and the two international Contests open to architects and experts contributions.

The steps of the project will be: reading physical characteristics of  place (not only park and its “vegetal architecture” but also buildings), the interpretation of its tangible and intangible cultural values, the evaluation of problems and opportunities, the definition of quality objectives focusing on sustainable and appropriate use and valorisation of the place.



Modalità di valutazione

The evaluation will be carried out taking into account the quality of the project developed and the ability of the student to present it with reference to the topics and themes dealt with in the Studio. The final evaluation will be determined by the contents of the project, by the candidates' exhibition capacity and by the student's work through all the Studio.
