052679 - ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS AND LANDSCAPE MAPPING
Obiettivi dell'insegnamento
The goal of the course is to enable students to use geographical information as a primary source of information for analysis of the landscape and as a starting point for further action (e.g., landscape and infrastructure design, interpretation of urban and rural landscapes, etc.) . The course covers both theoretical and practical aspects through a project work. The course will take advantage on Innovative didactics actions specifically cooperation external research institutions (CNR-IREA and CNR-IIA) and MOOC contents.
Risultati di apprendimento attesi
Lectures, exercise sessions and project work will allow students to:
Understand how geographical data are produced (instruments and techniques) to evaluate which product is more suitable for each specific purpose
Analyze and understand the goals, assumptions and requirements associated to a geographical data (e.g., vector layer, othophotos, DTMs, etc.)
Understand the value of multi-temporal datasets (e.g., historical maps and cartography) and how to integrate them with current data sets
Understand the principles of a Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
Realize analysis by using GIS tools
Define the role of a Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) and Open Data Platforms and Hubs
Communicate in a technically appropriate way the results of their analysis and share them with adequate tools
Argomenti trattati
Introduction to history of cartography problem statements and solutions along the centuries (metrical and non-metrical maps)
Cartographical data bases currently used (scale 1:1000 to 1:10000) with discussion of different types of maps, projection systems and reference systems an Italian and European level
Instruments and techniques used for the production of cartographic products (Photogrammetric methods, GNSS and LiDAR applications)
Introduction to Geographical Information Systems (GIS) basic concepts and applications
Practical exercise on GIS (georeferncing, production of new layer, query and analysis on data sets)
Open Data Platforms and Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDI)
Interoperability between different data sources
A project work is designed as part of the course. The objective of project is to help students in applying the approaches and principles covered during the class. The project can be carried out in small groups of students (3-5 students each group). Project topics will be introduced during the first class and discusses through the entire semester. Project outcomes are expected to be released at fixed deadlines. The project work will include class discussions supervised by the course instructor and by some tutors coming from external research institutions (CNR-IREA and CNR-IIA).
Prerequisiti
No specific entry requirements are requested
Modalità di valutazione
Evacuations will be based on: (i) an oral exam at the end of the course and (ii) a presentation of the project developed. The oral exam will cover all the topics covered during classes. The evaluation of projects will be based on the produced GIS mock-up (documentation, data sources, etc.) and on a presentation of the results.
During the final exam students:
Should demonstrate a deep understanding of the role of geographical data as primary source of information for landscape analysis
Should demonstrate a deep understanding on how to carry out a proper analysis by using the tools introduced during the course
Should answer in an appropriate way to questions and issues that may be raise up during the discussion of their project activity
Should demonstrate to be able to carry out a team work
