051707 - HISTORY OF CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE
Contemporary Architecture History programs usually deal with the critical analysis of capital topics of architectural debate and with the most significant works of the period from 1945 up today. This period corresponds to the crisis of the Modern Movement and the diffusion of heterogeneous addresses of postmodern culture. The educational goal of teaching is to make students aware - through critical analysis of ideas, events and works - of the process of development of the architectural culture that offered, and is still offering, the terms of the ongoing disciplinary debate. The aim of the teaching is to propose them an orientation on the different research addresses to stimulate a conscious definition of their own design orientation. The Professors will develop this training program on the base of their own personal approach to architectural history and teaching methods.

THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE SHORT TWENTIETH CENTURY. REDEFINING THE AGE OF THE EXTREMES (1914-1991)
First published 25 years ago by the British historian Eric Hobsbawm, Age of Extremes introduced the idea of a short century constricted between the end of the Age of Empire and the collapse of the geopolitical order of the Cold War. Accepting its fundamental premises, the course focuses on design culture along the “Short Twentieth Century”.
Lectures will debate issues and case studies considered as emblematic of a period or of a condition. Contemporary architecture will be observed in a historical perspective pointing out its connections with other realms (as arts or technique) and with cultural, social, political and economic changes as well. Special attention will be devoted to the dialectics between practices and theories and to the different scales of design, observed in their evolution in time.
The sequence of the lectures will thus provide a multi-layered and plural narrative, more or less chronologically ordered and focused on different kinds of topics and “objects”, such as issues, thresholds, buildings, books, exhibitions and design competitions.
Specific bibliographical references will be suggested during each lecture in order to integrate basic readings. Actually, one of the aims of the course is to briefly introduce students to the literature on the history of contemporary architecture and to encourage them to "build" their own reading list.
Modalità di valutazione
The final exam will consist in a written or an oral discussion of the topics covered in the programme. Students can also produce a short paper (about 5000 words) re-developing the topic of a specific lecture. The quality of the paper will be taken into account for the final grade and its contents will be partially discussed during the final exam (if taken orally). However, the production of the paper is not mandatory and an excellent result is reachable as well by demonstrating a good control of the topics discussed during lectures.
