Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

Contemporary Architecture History programs usually deal with the critical analysis of capital topics of architectural debate and with the most significant works of the period from 1945 up today. This period corresponds to the crisis of the Modern Movement and the diffusion of heterogeneous addresses of postmodern culture. The educational goal of teaching is to make students aware - through critical analysis of ideas, events and works - of the process of development of the architectural culture that offered, and is still offering, the terms of the ongoing disciplinary debate. The aim of the teaching is to propose them an orientation on the different research addresses to stimulate a conscious definition of their own design orientation. The Professors will develop this training program on the base of their own personal approach to architectural history and teaching methods.

Architecture, Urban Planning and Great events

This course is a follow-up of five preliminary courses under the heading “Is urban planning visible?” where we asked in which way and to which degree urban planning does shape the built environment of a modern city? What are the traces of the superimposed layers of planning proposals on the surface of the existing metropolis? Do they influence the form of the individual buildings n a given area or does the architectural form remain autonomous and to which degree?

Urban planning is a young discipline that emerged as an offspring of engineering, architecture, local administration, and social science at the turn of the last century in Great Britain, in the US, and in Germany. During the last hundred years it had a decisive impact on the formation of the modern big city varying around the world under the different political and economic conditions. It reached a first peak in the interwar period and a second one in the reconstruction and modernization period after the Second World War. In recent years due to neoliberal tendencies we face a certain decline of its influence in favour of private investment decision.

Urban planning comprises more than the planning of land use and infrastructure and architects play a very limited role in it. It reaches from technical or social infrastructure to the general regulation of construction activities but also has to fulfil tasks concerning the general representation of political power, has to react to changing social structures and is shaping the general conditions of private and public life. Often the traces of these activities aren’t visible at first sight. They may be concealed or had been physically invisible from the very beginning. Uncovering traces of urban planning, proposed or realized, in the existing built environment can help to better understand the links and interactions between planning and architecture, the relation of planning and building to other individual and spontaneous activities in the urban fabric, and thus to assess the autonomy of architecture in an metropolitan context. The case of Milan is an extraordinary rich case for a study of these processes.

The course of this semester at first hand will not deal with classical elements of urban planning but with ephemeral and temporarily limited big events like world fairs, Olympic games or other sports events, fashion weeks, open air concerts and alike. It will consist of two parts, a lecture series and a project seminar:

The lecture series will introduce to the trajectory of urban planning in relation to architecture presenting famous planning projects, influential planning competitions and important planning theories and debates. This year a special focus will be on historical large-scale events and their aftermath in the urban fabric. Far from being exhaustive these examples will be restrained to paradigmatic cases from different countries of Europe and overseas.

The project seminar will be based on individual work of the participants in thematic groups dealing with large scale events that took or take place in Milan. In three consecutive presentations the group work will be discussed in plenary meetings of the seminar. The first presentation will focus on impressions of visits to places related to the respective events, interviews with actors and planners, and promotional material. The second presentation is dedicated to a general analysis and specific questioning on the basis of in-depth study of archival material, maps and publications. For this step a reading capacity of Italian would be of great help! In the third step each group will confront its empirical findings with the information from primary and secondary sources and develop a strategy for the final presentation, of which no format is prescribed. It may consist of a booklet, a movie, a comic-strip, a rap or song, or even a dance performance, but must be based of the investigated case and show a particular creative effort and interest in the communication of the findings.


Modalità di valutazione

During the semester the intermediate results of these investigations will be presented and discussed in three consecutive steps. These presentations are a central element of the seminar and will define two thirds of the final notification. Thus they are already an element of the final examination. The last third of the evaluation will be based on the final presentation and report, which has to contain the essentials of the collective work in the group, not necessarily in the form of a written paper but as well as a visualisation or display of any appropriate kind.
