Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The Studio proposes an experience in architectural design facing the proper complexity of the process. Contextual, typological, functional, constructive, expressive and formal issues of the architectural design process will be treated in their mutual relationship and interaction. The design is challenged to critically appreciate ongoing transformations in real contexts and propose appropriate solutions. To achieve this goal students are guided: in a first phase, in the comprehension of the context of the project, in the evaluation of the alternative approaches proposed for the case study area in public debates, and in the appreciation of the relations between buildings and urban structure; in a second phase, in a research of experimental building types and forms able to combine compositional questions with design and technical aspects of the building.

The aim of the teaching is the elaboration of the design of a building facing the questions referring to the urban scale as to the detail scale, considering formal, technical, material and functional issues in their mutual relations.

Within the design process, the conceptual design of a structural system for seismic actions is of special interest, as it requires the adoption of an effective bracing system, in the context of a 3-d resisting frame with regularity properties both in plan and elevation.

The increasing presence of international students, and the semester teaching plan, push for experimenting new approaches to teach architectural design.

To do so, the Studio starts with a journey into central Italy (Villa Adriana and Tivoli), to establish a common ground by way of experience. What follows is a phase of brainstorming aimed at gaining a thorough understanding of the site in view of drafting a brief, and eventually developing the project.

Building upon building means developing a project based on a thorough interpretation of the existing situation, unlocking the architectural potential of a given context, spatial organization, structural logic, expressive and representative aspects.

In fact, students will be required to root their design concepts onto a careful reading of the existing situation, identifying elements of the historical palimpsest that could still play a part in a new poetic narrative and functional layout. Focusing on the rationale of architecture means mapping its latent potentials.


The context

Based on preliminary research undertaken for the competition “The Grand Villa Adriana. Designing The Buffer Zone” (team leader A. Torricelli, August 2018), the Studio focuses on the Sanctuary of Hercules the Victorious at Tivoli (II century BCE). This was one of the theatre-like temples of antiquity acting as a suburban commercial hub along Via Tiburtina Valeria, the road connecting Rome to Sannium. Despite its seemingly symmetrical layout, the original Sanctuary complex rose on a massive basement set on a complex topography, including a stonework gallery for Via Tiburtina Valeria as well as water-supplying channels. Commanding a fine view on river Aniene from a cliff of 100 metres, the present complex bears evidence of centuries reuse, decay and reconstruction, epitomising the notion of “building upon building” in historical perspective. In fact, the abandoned Sanctuary became a quarry for building material. Later on, it was partly inhabited by religious communities. Ever since the 17th century, it has accommodated industrial activities: a weapon factory, a wool manufacturing plant, a cannon foundry, a hydroelectric plant, a paper mill. In the 18th century, many painters portrayed the site as a vision of the sublime, where nature - water and vegetation - overcomes the geometric rule of architecture and tended gardens, taking buildings and ruins back into its realm. Over the centuries, the Sanctuary of Hercules has been a real book of stone for many architects, including Andrea Palladio and Giovan Battista Piranesi fascinated by the stratigraphy of its construction but also by its extraordinary architectural and landscape character.



Taking into account the experience gained over the last two years, the Studio will be organised in three stages, each subject to evaluation, as follows:

  1. Building a common ground:

1.b Understanding an historic building as a repository of projects


  1. The rationale of architecture :

2.a breaking down the site to draft the project brief

2.b identifying architectural themes (based on the interpretation of the existing building)


  1. Composition and expression:

3.a developing an architectural design proposal in line with the afore-mentioned trajectory

3.b pursuing an architectural expression and communicating core design concepts


Studio activity

Studio activity will include lessons on relevant cases, discussion of students’ projects with a check on progress made, seminars open to contributions from teachers invited from foreign universities.

The last part of the studio activity (composition and expression) will be specifically dedicated to help student structure their material for the final exam:

Intentional analysis / analysis relevant to the project

How the project relates to the context / site

Narrative / strategy / key design ideas

References and how they fed project
