Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The purpose of the Studio is to understand and know the phases necessary for the design of the existing building conservation project, the principles and best practices that are indispensable in the historical construction and essential for the graduation of architecture graduates. In addition to the creation of thematic maps concerning historical constructive techniques, forms of degradation or manifest or latent disruption with the study of the causes - for which the development of the survey is necessary - analyzes useful techniques for the diachronic reading of buildings, transferring the awareness of the role of the historical survey within the conservation process. Following the indispensable analysis phase to make informed and consistent choices, the student develops the artifacts conservation project by analyzing - among others - the requirements of efficacy, compatibility, durability, reversibility ... and sets the project for a possible new compatibility, considering the necessary adjustments to changing needs. Attention is also drawn to the drafting of the technical documents accompanying it, to the legislative framework within which it is built and to the connection between theoretical aspects and practical activity.

The purpose of the Laboratory is to make the student aware of the features and problems that the intervention on the built presents, in relation to its historical and cultural significance and at the same time as a resource for contemporary use. Therefore, besides ex cathedra lessons, he/she expects practical lessons on the concrete case studies to be "taught by doing" with the aim of implementing critical skills and operational tools that stimulate the care process to the built environment.

According to the Dublin Descriptors (DdD), passing the exam certifies the acquisition of the following results:

DdD 2 ability to apply knowledge and understanding

- ability to analyze the constructive and material characteristics of the historical building, to recognize the construction techniques, the structural elements and their respective functions, the materials and their physical and mechanical characteristics, the possible state of structural deterioration, the behavioural characteristics in relation to climatic and microclimatic issues;

- ability to develop projects for the conservation, restoration, recovery, reuse of architectural artefacts and the ability to manage transformations over time.

 

DdD 3 (autonomy of judgment), 4 (communication skills) and 5 (learning ability)

- ability to operate and communicate independently the design choices made (DdD 3, 4 and 5).

The Architectural Preservation Studio will deal with the conservation of a building recognized as Cultural Heritage.

The aim of the Studio is to provide students with operational and conceptual tools they need to develop a preservation project. At the same time the students will get a full awareness of of the role of the architect in the preservation process of cultural heritage and of the restoration project meant as a part of a broader conservation strategy, including investigation, prevention, maintenance, built up on a knowledge based approach.

In order to achieve such purposes the students will learn how to represent all the information gathered during the survey, the direct observation and the historic analysis by means of thematic maps concerning historical constructive techniques, decays or manifest or latent disruption with the study of the causes, analyzes useful techniques for the diachronic reading of buildings, transferring the awareness of the role of the historical survey within the conservation process. Following the propedeutic knowledge phase, the students will develop the conservation project by analyzing - among others - the requirements of efficacy, compatibility, durability,..., and by designing the compatible new functions, integrating conservation and valorisation.

The purpose of the Laboratory is to make the students aware of the features and problems that the intervention on the built cultural heritage presents, in relation to historical and cultural significance and at the same time as it is a resource for contemporary use. Therefore, besides ex cathedra lessons, there will be on the field lessons, using some historic buildings as case studies with the aim of implementing critical skills and operational tools.

In the first part of the course the attention will be paid on the survey techqniques. Geometric information will be collected, processed and elaborated following digital workflows based integrated use of innovative technologies such as laser scanning and photogrammetric reconstruction. Representation will make use of 2D and 3D projections obtained from digital reconstruction of surfaces and architectonical elements. 3D views and 3D schemes will be particularly useful to represent the shapes of the single interior volumes and indoor spaces. However the students will evaluate which representation technique will best serve each of their communication necessities. In the first phase the Studio will check and update student's competences on a series of different software (e.g. for elaboration of point clouds, rectified imagery and orthophotos) and skills in drawing and presentation of historic buildings in 2D and 3D using computer-aided design (CAD) tools. In the second phase, these skills will be used to support the development and preparation of technical drawings and models needed to fully describe the integrated solutions proposed for conservation and sustainable enhancement of built cultural heritage.

The Studio will update student’s competences about: - knowledge of the legal framework, also in comparison among different countries; - knowledge of theoretical positions in the current debate on preservation; - knowledge of traditional building materials and their degradation mechanisms; - knowledge of structural behavior of historical masonry buildings.

Thanks to these contents the Studio will develop: - the tools to elaborate technical drawings and technical reports foreseen in a restoration project. - the logic of a design method capable of achieving a balance between conscious new needs and the reality of the layered history and identity of the object; - the logic of permanence and change that every project involves (completeness / fragmentation, authentic / original, selection / stratification, new / old); - the methodological tools for a problem-solving approach (rather than pre-fab technical solutions); - the tools to design integrated solutions for conservation and valorisation of built cultural heritage.

Modalità di valutazione

Students will carry out their project in small groups. The project will be developed through on site work, entailing preventive study of the scientific and theoretical background.

During the classwork the students will take part in periodic and planned discussions about recognition of values, different protection measures, multiple roles of heritage in development models, and generally speaking on the presented topics.

Possible intermediate deliveries will be defined with students, in case of midway deliveri a mark will be assigned.

Oral examination will be focused on the discussion of the project and an individual check on theoretical, scientific and methodological issues.

Besides the two texts specified below, all the presentations provided will be considered part of the mandatory bibliography
