Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

In this Studio advanced methodologies are applied for describing and interpreting physical and product contexts - practical and theoretical - of contemporary architectural culture, with the aim of experimenting with the transformation of the environment built through the design of architecture. The laboratories are based on the integration of specific architectural composition expertise with others from the urban studies sector. In this way, paradigms are set up to understand and understand, in historical perspective and in different scales, the space inhabited in its multiple configurations: morphological and typological, ecological and environmental, economic and social, anthropological and cultural. In the labs, integrated knowledge allows to modify the choices made by the architecture project in relation to the complexity of the urban and territorial contexts to which it is addressed. In this framework, the techniques, tools and methods acquired in the field of architectural and urban planning are used to investigate complex relationships such as those between open spaces, constructed and relationships, infrastructures and landscapes, cultural heritage and neglected or vulnerable areas, permanent and temporary structures, public uses and private destinations. The didactic goal is to prepare students for the task of improving the quality of human settlements, promoting the conscious use of resources and measuring the inherent fragility of the built environment.

According to the Dublin Descriptors (DdD), passing the exam certifies the acquisition of the following results:

DdD 1 knowledge and understanding

- knowledge of the fundamental elements of the architectural and urban composition for their use in the design process for the transformation of places.

DdD 2 ability to apply knowledge and understanding

- ability to control the compositional aspects of the project, its typological and functional characteristics, which regulate the qualitative relationships of the architectural forms of the space.

DdD 3 (autonomy of judgment), 4 (communication skills) and 5 (learning ability)

- ability to operate and communicate independently the design choices made (DdD 3, 4 and 5).

Argomenti trattati

“ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO” students will be asked to complete a project, defined to the proper scale, of landscape, urban design, and architecture; continuous social, economic and political transformations will be the framework of each intervention as driving forces of physical environment's contemporary fragility.

The Studio will focus on the relationships that design must build between urban design, landscape, forms, typologies, constructive techniques, and structures, strengthening theoretical and technical knowledge of the participants.
Instead of merely focusing on architecture, students will operate on the premise that different components of the urban realm (such as the public spaces and infrastructure) are important to the liveability of a city.

The teaching program of Elements of Architectural Typology will give the students several theoretical and practical tools for developing the project at the scale of the building. A series of lectures will introduce the relationship between permanence and mutation in the typological analysis through a survey of a few contemporary case-studies, and the role of the place in its tangible and intangible components in the configuration of the architectural form.

Students are required to be attentive and active. Theoretical incursions will support activities in the classroom, alternating class work with direct site experience (study trip, visits to significant locations). Through the project, students acquire an awareness of design choices in relation to various components, like but not limited to environmental, ecological, typological, programmatic issues.

The course will be taught with support of site visits, lectures, regular reviews, studio exercises and assignments. Groups composed by 4-5 students will be required to develop their project in three main steps:
A. The first assignment consists of a detail study, survey and analysis of the project area (with maps, sketched, photographic interpretation and etc.)- Deliverables: 15 min power point presentation + A3 Book (or one A0 poster) with drawings, schemes, photos, sketches, sections and short texts.
B. The students are expected to complete and deliver their design concept of the project along with a review and interpretation of at least 3 relevant reference projects - Deliverables: 10 min presentation of two A0 posters
C. The final submission each group delivers the definitive project- Deliverables: 15 min presentation of final A0 posters+ A3 book (which includes the studies reference projects) + model

Evaluation Criteria:

* ¿ Study and presentation of case studies and references relevant to their project concept
* ¿ Meeting project program requirements
* ¿ Strength of the concept an its expression in the project
* ¿ Progress in design comprehension and complex elements
* ¿ Quality of the graphic presentation
* ¿ Writing and oral skills

Grading policy:
* • First assignment (20%)
* • Second assignment (20%)
* • The final project (50%)
* • Quality of group working, participation, preparedness, progress and attendance* (10%)

* The course attendance is mandatory: each student should attend at least at 70% of the total amount of course hours.
