Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

In this Studio advanced methodologies are applied for describing and interpreting physical and product contexts - practical and theoretical - of contemporary architectural culture, with the aim of experimenting with the transformation of the environment built through the design of architecture. The laboratories are based on the integration of specific architectural composition expertise with others from the urban studies sector. In this way, paradigms are set up to understand, in historical perspective and in different scales, the space inhabited in its multiple configurations: morphological and typological, ecological and environmental, economic and social, anthropological and cultural. In the labs, integrated knowledge allows to modify the choices made by the architecture project in relation to the complexity of the urban and territorial contexts to which it is addressed. In this framework, the techniques, tools and methods acquired in the field of architectural and urban planning are used to investigate complex relationships such as those between open spaces, constructed and relationships, infrastructures and landscapes, cultural heritage and neglected or vulnerable areas, permanent and temporary structures, public uses and private destinations. The didactic goal is to prepare students for the task of improving the quality of human settlements, promoting the conscious use of resources and measuring the inherent fragility of the built environment.

According to the Dublin Descriptors (DdD), passing the exam certifies the acquisition of the following results:

DdD 1 knowledge and understanding

- knowledge of the fundamental elements of the architectural and urban composition for their use in the design process for the transformation of places.

DdD 2 ability to apply knowledge and understanding

- ability to control the compositional aspects of the project, its typological and functional characteristics, which regulate the qualitative relationships of the architectural forms of the space.

DdD 3 (autonomy of judgment), 4 (communication skills) and 5 (learning ability)

- ability to operate and communicate independently the design choices made (DdD 3, 4 and 5).

Abstract 

ARCHITECTURE BUILDS FOR TO INHABIT? WHICH IS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TO BUILD AND TO INHABIT?

Architecture is possible because man is an inhabitant. The habitation - or, rather, the connection between construction and habitation - is the condition of possibility of architecture. Architecture is the art of construction, to the extent that it is also the art of inhabiting.

But Today it seems that construction and inhabiting have separated and faraway.

How does Architecture could re-bring together construction and Habitation? These issues require to re-think the architecture tools and the ways of dealing with practices in a new vision about coexistence on the earth with the other beings. The Studio will explore these main issues using a study case as project experimental field.

Pedagogic objectives 

The design task focuses on the dialectical relationship between inhabiting and constructing, architecture and the place, in the belief that an understanding of contemporary transformations should elaborate on the concrete heritage and the ecological environment, recognizing permanence and variation and discovering new ways of conviviality.  We will explore the threshold between wilderness and civilization, nature and culture, matter and meaning.

In this Studio we will use the construction tools as way to develop the project and to check the sequence of design choices in a real process of development of architecture. In this sense the Studio projects will have a client with whom we will discuss goals and program in different meetings and revisions.

In this framework, the techniques, tools and methods acquired in the field of architectural and urban design are used to investigate complex relationships such as those between open spaces, constructed and natural, infrastructures and landscapes, agricolture and forest, cultural heritage and neglected or vulnerable areas, permanent and temporary structures, public uses and private destinations.

The didactic goal is to prepare students for the task of improving the quality of human settlements and the coexistence with the other beings (animals, plants and minerals), promoting the conscious use of resources and measuring the inherent fragility of the built environment.

Design and Research Process 

The Studio focuses on the project of new research laboratory, new convivial spaces and a serie of temporary pavilions for a RESEARCH AGENCY ON ANCIENT WHEATS FOR CONTEMPORARY AGRICULTURE in Sicily. The pavilions should host multiple activities, such as a display center, a meeting room, an open air stage, a small auditorium, an oven room, a conviviality hall, an Hostel, a Guest House for researcher people, an observatory tower, etc. The Agency office is located in Sicily, in a small rural village near Caltagirone in the middle of a cork oak forest. This new buildings have to make new relations with the cork oak forest and the neighboring agriculture. At this moment the Agency is trying to plan the future developments of its activities trying to expand its mission to other research fields. To achieve these goals on the one hand its laboratories should be strengthened, on the other hand should be developed the hospitality offer for researchers. Furthermore, it should be improved the relationship with the oak forest  in order to consider it as an open-air laboratory.

The Studio uses this main goal as key to understand urban space, landscape, agriculture and the relationship with the close city of Caltagirone. Student will use a strategy based on the reading, translation and reconfiguration of a series of devices already practiced by the community.  Thanks to a new design those devices find other expressions and forms. The key in common to all the projects about the case study will be the idea of connecting the fragments into new assemblages through the articulation and multiplication of possible movements. Self-construction will be the way to understand and to feel weight, dimension, matter and weaving of building materials, experimenting with the ways to transform them into spaces to inhabit.

The Studio calendar is made of three parts: 

  1. TRANSLATION (Analysis)

We use the drawings and models as a privileged tools of translation to understand and synthesize complex and vital processes. In this way students can experiment, with greater freedom, a precise project practice. Starting from a few apparently insignificant traces, they are capable to read and understand the articulation of the processes in progress in a complex territory.This part is divided in two steps: the first is  focused on to critical understanding (trough drawings and models) of three examples of rural architecture (one of informal culture, the other two - one ancient and one  contemporary - of high architectural culture). Rural houses are the key for the comprension of complex relationship between construction, wilderness, agricolture and the real possibility to unhabit architecture;

the second step is focused to the critical analysis of the selected site, with the aims of understanding a complex urban condition, of giving a clear and well organized reading of the existing condition, of indicating a possible direction for a project of radical transformation. This part of the studio will revolve around the production of a characterization of the site and a multidimensional analysis of its key features. The main aim of this first part of the Studio will be to begin to frame a complex  environmental and urban condition, to provide a clear and well-organized reading of such condition; and to pave the way for a project of radical transformation of the area considered.

The goals of the TRANSLATIONS are:

a) To individuate architectural problems and opportunities, taking a deep knowledge of the site, arriving to a personal interpretation of the architectural and spatial characters of the site in its actual condition: its buildings, its open spaces, its environment and surroundings, its infrastructural connections.

b) To clarify the role of various elements and process in the existing as well as future condition, examining slow and fast mobility, connections, spatial sequences, anchors, landscapes.

c) To investigate the social and ecological context, identifying and framing the often contrasting aspirations and key concerns that various elements may have in relation to the redevelopment of the area.

d) To describe the active devices that generate and connect different element in complex processes.

  1. ASSEMBLAGE (Architectural Design)

The Studio will consider the design as an assemblage process that combines different devices and simple elements in active textures.

“Assemblages are ad hoc groupings of diverse elements, of vibrant materials of all sort. Assemblages are living, trotting confederations that are able to function despite the persistent presence of energies that confound them from within. (…) Assemblages are not governed by any central head: no one materiality or type of material has sufficient competence to determine consistently the trajectory or impact of the group. The effects generated by an assemblage are, rather, emergent properties, emergent in that their ability to make something happen (a newly inflected materialism, a blackout, a hurricane, a war on terror) is distinct from the sum of the vital force of each materiality considered alone. Each member and promo-member of the assemblage has a certain vital force, but there is also an effectivity proper to the grouping as asuch: an agency of the assemblage. And precisely because each member.actant maintains an energetic pulse slightly “off” from that of the assemblage, an assemblage is never a stolid block but an opened-ended collective, a non-totalizable sum.” (BENNET Jane, Vibrant Matter. The assemblages help to generate the program and the design guidelines for the architectural project.With the word "program" we here do not refer just to functions, which are just a minimal part of the whole architectural concept, but, more widely, we comprehend the different ways to inhabit the spaces and the place and the possible relationship with other beings and matter.

  1. CONSTRUCTION (Construction drawings, economic previsions and self construction)The Studio focused on construction of devices to experiment directly the possibility to build convivial space. Selfconstruction will be the way to understand and to feel weight, dimension, matter and weaving of building materials, experimenting with the ways to transform them into spaces to inhabit. The design work will be supported by Workshop and Site Visit Trip, Lectures and Seminars, where theoretical claims and concepts related to project themes will be addressed. Among the topics touched upon in the lectures and seminars, there are: ‘Fragile Earths’, ‘Disposition’, ‘Tomografic sections’, ‘Informal vs Formal’, “Inhabiting and constructing”, and ‘Traditional vs Contemporary’. The design process will be assisted by a 'Toolbox': short communications and explanation on some practical techniques about drawings, models and dedicated software.

Modalità di valutazione

The Studio to shape up as a collective learning exercise in which knowledge is developed individually and in groups, and then shared more widely. Active participation and contribution to the development of the various Studio phases is strongly encouraged and will be positively evaluated.

The students will be evaluated on the base of their preliminary analytical work (Translation), their attendance and active participation in the collective discussion, and the quality and depth of their design proposal at various steps (Assemblage, Construction). The evaluation will focus on the acquisition of critical awareness.
Final exams as well as intermediate deliveries will consist in the presentation and discussion of the requested materials. Marks will be individual and based on the students’ understanding of the issues involved. The evaluations for the interim reviews and submission will be given a weight of 40% of the final mark. The remainder 60% will be assigned to the final project which will ought to be concluded by the end of the semester.
The assessment of the learning outcomes and of the competences of students will follow the objectives of the Dublin indicators. In the interim reviews and submission the learning skills and the capacity of knowledge and understanding of the contents of the lectures and readings will be assessed through the elaboration of a written presentation. In the final review and submission, the capacity of applying knowledge and understanding, of making judgements and the communication skills of the students will be assessed through the oral presentation and the delivery of models, boards, personal sketchbook and a portfolio collecting all the works elaborated during the studio.
