Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The goals of the Studio are: on the one hand, to experiment with the complexity of the design process, from the design to the realisation, by acquiring knowledge about the relationships between technological, energetic, environmental and structural aspects; on the other hand, to illustrate the cognitive, methodological, organizational and procedural tools in the different stages of the construction process new energy efficiency construction building. Since from the first phases of studio activity particular attention is paid to functional, constructive and environmental choices in relation to energy design and plant engineering.

Students:

- gain knowledge and understanding of the tools and techniques for technological, environmental and installation design, in compliance with the current regulatory framework;

- are capable of coordinating in the design different construction issues respecting environmental, physical, regulatory and cultural constraints;

- are capable of providing a coordinated and multidisciplinary management of the technological, energetic-environmental and structural themes of the design, on the base of priority requirements, decisions anticipation and evaluation of the various available technical options and of the application of the tools to support design decisions.


Argomenti trattati

The guided design activity will be developed through different phases and scales with a stress on environmental, economic and social sustainability, simultaneously controlling architectural, technological, structural, energetic and building systems issues. The goal is to transfer a design methodology based on the awareness of the design choices to respond to users’ demand, though encompassing the context’s potentials and limitations.

The design experience aims to illustrate the cognitive, methodological, organizational and procedural tools in the different phases of the building process aimed at the construction of complex architectural interventions of new construction or redevelopment of the existing one.

Building are responsible for 40% of Europe’s energy use, and the largest share of energy consumption in building are heating. Thermal insulation can reduce the heat lost from buildings and therefore save energy and money. The European Energy Performance of Building Directive (EPBD) is concerned with the promoting energy efficiency in building across Europe using cost effective measures, applying energy performance standard to existing building and new building. Controlling thermal interaction through the building envelope is important also to maintaining indoor thermal comfort and therefore it require proper selection of thermal control strategies and building material.

Through the use and application of a specific software, student will design zero energy building in compliance with the enforced regional and local regulations, evaluate building’s energy need and compare different energy-efficiency solution.

Attendance is compulsory.


Prerequisiti
 

Modalità di valutazione

The evaluation provides seminarial comparisons during the course progress (at the end of each phase of the project) and during the final exam aimed at testing the knowledge and understanding of the tools and techniques of the project. During the various seminar tests the students are asked to present and discuss their project, taking care to highlight the coherence with the theoretical assumptions of the laboratory.

The intermediate evaluation will have the aim of evaluating the activity developed by each students in its group. The evaluation will depend by the knowledge of the subject and the ability to apply this knowledge to the project.

The  final evaluation, carried out trhough an oral interview, will regard a discussion about the project and the theorical background provided through the lectures. The mail aim of final evaluatio will be assessing the knowledge and understanding of the topics analysed during the course and their application through the design activity, the ability to make judgements demonstrated through the design choices, the acquired communication skills through the presentation of the project and, finally, lifelong learning skills through the learning of a working methodology.
