Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The definition of the concept of Resilience says that it is the ability to adapt to something disturbing or to an adverse situation. In urban areas, the architectural discipline is increasingly seeking new reaction mechanisms from both public and civil society. In particular, in the conditions of risk, linked in first condition to the factors determined by climate change, but also to other phenomena that disturb the urban or social environment, cities need strategies to react to the events that may arise from this. The course seeks, therefore, to reflect on these possible strategies starting from the state of the art but opening up to experimentations that unite the ecological with the social.

Risultati di apprendimento attesi

The students will acquire categories and tools to face the design in risk situations with a broad perspective and to understand concepts such as urban governance, resilience, etc from a point of view strategic and not only technical or monodisciplinary.

The students will expertise the relationship between collective resilience strategies, and therefore the co-management mechanisms between city and citizens in risk conditions – ecological or social -, within the actions that from the architecture and urbanism allow to open mechanisms of governance and social innovation in a practical conditions.

The project will experiment diferrent methods to undestand and act in a new urban governance based on collectivity.

Argomenti trattati

The course aims to observe the contemporary city and architecture - buildings and public space - through their heritage and ecological components and the contradictory relationship between local dimension and global scale, a risk that affects to the resilience in urban contexts. As in UN-Habitat concept, cities face to the necessity to look for new Resilient Strategies to give answer to new Risk Situations, natural or human-made.

The process will be develop through the observation of a specific typology that characterizes the ecological and social identity of the Mediterranean city. The PATIO-HOUSE (the courtyard as an open-air space inside the building) represents not only an historical architecture - around which social relations are established and which, at the same time, regulates the natural energy of the building, its lighting, its ventilation, its shadow - but also, in its sequence and repetition, a dense and porous urban environment such as the Mediterranean city. The patio - in continuity with the public space as a collective courtyard - is a natural regulator of the architecture and, at the same time, a green-cell system of the Mediterranean city that has to be updated in a new Urban and Social Ecology.

The recent phenomenon of Gentrification shows in many cases the contradiction between the different scales of the city, as well as between its physical and social components. In this sense, and starting from a specific typology and urban context, the course will work on new bottom-up and co-management way to look for a resilient city in an increasingly globalized world in order to garantee its ecological and social sustanability.

Theoretical classes and exercises in an intensive seminary - with the participation of external architects and invited experts - will integrate the development of a practical activity that will be carried out in two exercises. The first one will be a project in a specific case for a patio-house and relative public space in the historical center of the city of Córdoba, in the South of Spain, declared World Heritage and, since 2012, Intangible Heritage for the anthropological coexistence around the courtyard. The second exercise will be the reproduction and interpretation with models, sketches and drawings of a patio-architecture of the student's culture.

Modalità di valutazione

The final grade will be the result of the proportional addition of three partial grades:

-          25% corresponding to the participation on the seminar and debates.

-          50% corresponding to the first exercise.

-          25% corresponding to the second exercise.

In order to pass the course, all the partial grades will have to be evaluated. Special attention will be given to the capacity of the student for the reinterpretation of the theme in his/her culture and the result of the project in the first exercise with models, sketches, videos and drawings. A final critic/exam will be the way to synthetize all the intensive course.
