Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

This course aims at providing detailing understanding at an advanced level of the composition, microstructure, and engineering behaviour of various materials used in building engineering applications. A focus on durability of the materials used in building will be carried out. 

The aims of the course are integrated in the general learning objectives of the Master programme related to the understanding and practice of multi-disciplinary design and to achieve the necessary skills to design innovative envelope components and to assess the related performances in their service life.


Risultati di apprendimento attesi

Upon completion of the course, the students will know about the characteristics and durability of various advanced construction materials, ranging from reinforced and pre-stressed concrete to reinforced plastics and advanced functional materials used in buildings.

They will be able to assess, critically, how using various advanced construction materials in the design of a range of buildings and structures, in relation to durability, serviceability and safety of building.

They will also know about advanced materials and technologies for the rehabilitation of building engineering structures in order to perform a proper selection of the repair techniques considering the existing materials, the deterioration processes of the building, the environmental exposure and the service life.


Argomenti trattati

The main topics of the course are:

- advanced structural materials (the program especially focuses on concrete and steel, but also other materials will be considered)

- advanced functional materials

- degradation of materials, modelling of service life and design for durability

- characterization of materials and quality controls


Prerequisiti

A basic knowledge of the structure and properties of traditional construction materials is a pre-requisite for students who attend this course.


Modalità di valutazione

Written and oral examination. 

Oral exam will be allowed only if the evaluation of the written exam will be positive.

In the written exam theoretical questions and short exercises will be included in order to evaluate the comprehension of the topics analysed during the course.

With the oral exam the student will have to prove, showing the ability to integrate knowledge and handle complexity, that she/he has achieved the expected learning outcomes.

The final evaluation will be related to the results of the written and the oral exam.
