Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The course in Building Services deals with the subject of air conditioning systems and integrated services in buildings with particular attention to the energy consumption and efficiency. After reviewing the different types of systems available and their specific design, the course deals with the design of mechanical and thermal systems and the use of available sources, aiming to provide thermal and electrical features, ventilation, drainage systems and the production of domestic hot water. The course, while dealing with air and water systems in buildings will be focused on the study of the optimization from the point of view of energy, space required and cost of conventional technologies. The use of systems that combine traditional generation types with proper use of renewable sources is also introduced.


Risultati di apprendimento attesi

Lectures and tutoring sessions will allow students to:

- know the most updated concepts about energy handling systems in building related mainly to indoor conditions control and services;

- know how environmental parameters affect thermal comfort and main indoor air quality concepts ;

- know the relationship between technical choices and energy consequencies in HVAC (heating cooling air conditioning) applications ;

- learn and understand basic design procedures related to technical systems, hydronic piping and aeraulic ductworks;


- apply design strategies for energy efficiency to a complex system project;

- critically select systems and technologies fitting real applications;

- improve their ability to adapt concept to real situations in different climate and economical scenarios; 



Argomenti trattati

During the course, the relationship between energy consumption and performances in building will be thoroughly investigated, ranging from global issues to applied techniques. A number of application best practice examples will be presented, showing how the comprehension of the basic principles leads to an organic and structured vision of complex systems and the subdivision of the systems in a number of independent but integrated systems.

Students will be shown that the design of energy- and technology-related issues is often a creative activity, implying the ability to choose energy strategies, climate- specific architectural languages and suitable technical choices.

During the term, professionals will be invited to give lectures on specific themes and technologies. The theoretical concepts presented during the lectures will be applied in a number of numerical exercises;

The Studio activity will be based on:

  1. Performance definitions in order to explain what is to be done in term of modern building requirements.; 

  2. Moist air theory principles and application; 

  3. Design simulation in order to prove comprehension and 
basic selection activities;
  4. calculations in order to optimise the design for HVAC systems. 


Prerequisiti

The fundamentals of building physics, moist air theory and heat transfer theory are necessary to understand the concepts about energy efficiency that the course deals with.
 A basic knowledge of building technologies is also recommended.


Modalità di valutazione

The final evaluation is individual. The mark will derive from the result of a Written Test  (no open book) and of a Oral Test based on the topics explained during the lessons. 

The exercises proposed into the Written Test will be explained and numerically developed during the second part of each lesson.

The final mark of the Studio will be composed as follows:

         -  70% written test evaluation

         -  30% oral test evaluation

Note:

this is an handbook whose chapters cover most of the subject of the course, and could be helpful in order to have an Overview on Building services to students who are not going to attend every lessons. It's not enough in order to practice with numerical exercises and Written test preparation.
