051829 - SOCIOLOGY OF CONTEMPORARY CITIES
Contemporary cities are undergoing major changes that affect the socio-demographic, socio-economic and socio-institutional dimensions. Such changes have deep impacts on the contexts in which people live, on the resources they can get access to, as well as on their housing needs and practices and residential choices.
The aim of the course is to give the student some critical and practical instruments to consider the implications of the current changes in contemporary cities for architectural and planning work.
The course will first introduce the student to sociology, providing the basic elements of classic and contemporary theory and of methodology. Second, it will focused on the analysis of the main changes affecting contemporary cities in a comparative perspective, looking in depth to: socio-economic changes and the shift towards the post-industrial society; changes related to socio-demographic trends and migration flows; urban segregation and social exclusion; changes in local governance systems; the impact of the great economic recession.
Different materials will be proposed for discussion.
Active participation of attending students throughout the course will be encouraged and evaluated. Attending students will be invited to carry out an exercise on one of the themes of the course, to be agreed upon with the professor, to develop it under the supervision of the professor, and to present it and discuss it in class.
At the beginning of the course a syllabus will be provided with a detailed lists of the readings for both attending and non attending students.

Student's capacity to consider critically the implications of the current changes in contemporary cities for architectural and planning work.

2) The industrial city and the fordist order
3) The post-fordist city
5) Changing state regulations and rescaling
6) Social polarization, Social exlusion and urban segregation
7) Urban regeneration and gentrification.
During the educational path the sequence of the courses and the order of registration of the related exam must follow the priority specified in the study programme regulation.
Modalità di valutazione
For attending students the evaluation will consist in:
Presentation (group or individual) of the students’ exercise
Oral test on the reading lists that will be indicated (see the syllabus for the detailed list) and based both on theoretical questions on topics covered in the programme and questions intended to reveal the student's ability to connect the various topics with one another.
For non attending students the evaluation will consist in:
Oral test on the reading lists that will be indicated (see the syllabus for the detailed list) and based both on theoretical questions on topics covered in the programme and questions intended to reveal the student's ability to connect the various topics covered with one another.
