The studio didactic activity allows to test the student's ability to apply to concrete issues the knowledge gained within the teachings.
The Architectural Design Studio 3 offers to the student the possibility of a critical and articulated understanding of the context of architecture at the different scales of relationship – local, urban, regional and of the landscape – with the aim of reaching the formal definition of feasible architectural organisms.
The Design Studio will deepen some relevant aspects of the architectural composition and design process like the relationship with other contextual references, the history and the technique for the formal and functional definition of architecture, related to its physical manifestation and its significance.
In this perspective, the project will deal with complex situations, in relation to which the principle of architectural insertion is identified, and the morphological, typological, spatial configurative characteristics are elaborated, considering the functional contents and the appropriate technologies.
The Design Studio aims to train and organize the necessary design skills from the initial idea to the elaboration of deepening and details through the definition of new architectural organisms, interventions on the existing buildings or urban and landscape redevelopments.

Through the experience of the Architectural Design Studio 3, the student will acquire the following knowledge and processing skills: relate the architectural work to the scales of the physical contexts and to the morphology of the settlement fabric; identify the relationship between architecture and the place and the open space; determine the type-morphological characteristics of the architecture with attention to the composition and distribution aspects of the buildings; experiment with complex types and innovative settlement methods; define the configurative characters of the space in relation to the functional contents and construction techniques; outline the architectural language based on the most appropriate technologies; develop the design process with consistency from the initial idea to in-depth studies of detail.
The studio will focus on the urban housing project in Milan. The teaching method is based on theoretical lectures, group discussions and hands-on exercises. A project work will be developed by students in order to investigate the architectural design from urban issues to constructive arguments. The students will be divided in small teams (2 or 3 students each team) and each team will have to develop one project from the urban to the small constructive scale. During the semester, designing mediums will include many kinds of sketch modeling, sketching, making of full size pieces of the building and drawing methods both that you used last semester and new ones. In addition we will be working in model (big and small scale) and digital programs that can be useful in explaining your design.
The city of Milan has recently engaged in a series of urban re-generation programs. This Architectural Design Studio will focus on one of this. We will work on Milan urban identity.
We will design an housing building program. Our idea is to develop a medium scale building (7.000 – 15.000 square meters) for investigating urban and constructive issues. We will design a complex program able to join different function: residential, commercial and social.
The students must control the main architectural skills. In the studio we'll focus on own student personal capability.
During the educational path the sequence of the courses and the order of registration of the related exam must follow the priority specified in the study programme regulation.
Modalità di valutazione
The final exam will be an oral exam, in which each student will have to present and to discuss the different exercises and the final project. The final exam will take in consideration the evaluation of each exercises developed during the year.
The final evaluation will take in consideration also the improvement done during the course, the interest in the topics covered in class, critical and design skills developed during the year. The Studio will be organized as a journey in which every student will be an active part of that. We will also expect critical discussions and debates along the year, after each phase of the design.
