Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The course History of Art concerns, through an introduction and deepening on specific and significant study-cases, some of the main chapters of art history, especially modern and contemporary art. The course analyses some changes occurred through the Centuries to some fundamental themes of painting and sculpture, referring them to their relationship with architecture. The course does not offer a chronological overview on history of art, but it focuses on some significant episodes in which fundamental characters of a period or of a theme, or the terms of a cultural and aesthetic turn arise. The aim is to propose a method of deep interpretation of art events, taken as samples, in relation to their various historical contexts. Drawing inspiration from the proposed argumentations and iconographical references, students will be encouraged to participate actively by offering their observations and interpretations.

As well as educating students in the historical interpretation of artefacts in their cultural contexts, a course in History of Art provides skills in the critical analysis of artworks and of the stylistic personality of the artists involved through the cultivation of ‘visual literacy’, serving the needs (last but not least) of enduring personal enlightment and spiritual enrichment.

At the end of the course the student will have gained knowledge and understanding of the artistic phenomena and developed specific communication skills, enriching his cultural education. In particular, he will be able to: know and understand some fundamental themes of the figurative arts, with particular reference to their relationship with architecture; know and understand some methods of interpretation of the facts of art, taken as samples; recognize the specificities of the different artistic movements, different artists, different works of art illustrated in the course in their various historical contexts.

Argomenti trattati

The course of lectures will mainly concern Italian and European History of Art following up and integrating the model and paradigm of sir Ernst Gombrich's famous "Story of Art" and its last crucial essay on "The Preference for the Primitive" (2002) with the updated and farseeing criticism of Salvatore Settis on the Classical tradition ("The Future of the Classical", 2006). The Italian Renaissance, its Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Romanesque, Gothic roots and heritage with their classical leitmotiv and core will stand as the main axe of the course in a possibly fruitful contrast and comparison with Primitive artworks of the Prehistoric Age or the updated perspective of Modern Criticism of 19th and 20th Century and of the Contemporary artistic Zeitgeist. The course of lectures aims at two major goals: 1) the description and recognition of the main artistic facts of the Italian and European Art History during 2500 years of Civilization (from ancient Greece to the Renaissance) as a great contribute to the world heritage and culture; 2) the definition of an art critical and art historical method and the building of a fresh sensibility and severe knowledge for what can be still considered a High Style through the interpretation and concretely updated use of Roberto Longhi’s sharply descriptive concepts of the Italian Renaissance Style. Roberto Longhi’s revolutionary idea of a main line of Italian History of Art from Masaccio to Piero della Francesca to the Venetian High Renaissance tradition and his avantgarde idea of Art as a selfsufficient universe will be integrated and deployed taking as well into consideration the most important results of contemporary historical and critical studies, including the foremost iconographical and iconological surveys of the historical and conceptual meanings which the late XX century and the early XXI century scholarship has rediscovered in Renaissance art, especially taking into consideration both Enst Gombrich modern "scientifical" approach and Salvatore Settis new scholarship as far as the Humanities are concerned. Here follows a list of the main topics that will be focused and explained during the course of lectures:

* "Strange beginnings": Primitive Art in the European Prehistoric Age; * Writing History from East to West: compared analysis of Sumerian, Egyptian, Minoan, Mycenaean Art; * The awakening of Greek Art during ancient Greece’s archaic age; * “Being Beauteous”: the Classical period of Greek Art; * The wonders and new formal expression of the Hellenistic World; * Establishing, exposing and celebrating History and Power: Roman Art; * The realm of the Spirit: Late Roman, Paleochristian and Byzantine Art; * “Elle est le mur même”: Romanesque sculpture in France and Northern Italy; *Late medieval painting in Italy: Giotto’s revolution; * The revival and mith of Antiquities in the early Italian Renaissance: Masaccio, Donatello, Piero della Francesca, Mantegna; *Science versus Fiction and Truth: Leonardo, Raffaello, Michelangelo; *Light and colour in Venetian Renaissance: Giovanni Bellini, Giorgione, Tiziano.



During the educational path the sequence of the courses and the order of registration of the related exam must follow the priority specified in the study programme regulation.

Modalità di valutazione

In order to pass the final oral exam all students will be requested to arrive at and to gain an historical understanding of the origins of artefacts within specific european cultures, knowing about the circumstances of their making, their makers, the media used, the functions of the images and objects, their critical reception and – last but not least – their subsequent history. Students will be requested to give an historical interpretation of artefacts in their cultural contexts, showing as well their skills in the critical analysis and description of artworks through the cultivation of what can be called, in the wake of “Die Kunstliteratur” , a ‘visual literacy’.

Students will be especially requested to point out and to focus on the main categories and concepts concerning the History of Style and Taste in Europe starting from the antinomy Classical/Primitive which will underline the whole Course of lectures. Most of the topics will in fact concern the vital and vivid development of the Classical idea of Art through the centuries from Antiquities to the Modern Age in Europe. A good knowledge of the main ideas and facts of all the historical cultural contexts in the Program will be also a fundamental request in order to understand the formal and visual meaning of each single and "unique" artwork. An additional request will be the capacity of the students to link the historical and critical visual interpretation of the masterpieces to their masters poetics and to their biographies.

The whole course of lectures will be held in English therefore the final exam will be held in English as well. The evaluation will necessarily presume a good knowledge of the English Language in general and of the History of Art terminology in particular.

The level of fluency in the final oral test will be also taken into consideration as well as, according to the circumstances, the personal participation of the students to the lessons and their work in progress as far as their arthistorical knowledge and criticism is concerned.
