Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The Studio didactic activity allows to test the student's ability to apply to concrete issues the knowledge gained within the teachings.

The Architectural design studio 2 proposes a consolidation of basic knowledge, reinforcing the theoretical and technical foundations, with the particular attention to the relationships that design must build among places, forms, typologies, construction techniques and structures.

The project is applied to an architectural organism with medium complexity, inserted into urban context with specific characters.

The different teaching contributions inside the Laboratory structure the complexity of the design experience, featuring the necessity to create articulated relationships among the various existing disciplinary areas and the associated building and urban scalar levels.

The aim is the acquisition of the ability to control the project, in relation with architectural object and urban context, form and construction, and typological characters and forms of use of the inhabited space.

Through the experience of the Architectural design studio 2, the student acquires the ability to face the project as a complex combination of formal contents (typological-morphological), reasons of use (program, use destinations), constructive components (techniques, materials); in particular, has the ability to deepen the themes of the architectural composition and architectural typology, in relation with the designed space and the city characters.

Moreover, through the project activity, the student learns the ability to manage, in the project activity, articulated relationships between the different disciplinary areas involved and the associated building and urban scalar levels; in particular, to understand the fundamental concepts of equilibrium, distinguishes the most common structural typologies, has a qualitative understanding of the connection among configurations of formal-typological, structural typologies and constructive technologies.

Design topic, methodology and multidisciplinary teaching method

The Architectural Design Studio 2-project will be focused on morphological, typological, building construction, details, and design aspects and will be based on descriptions and interpretative analyses that will highlight site potentialities in connection to the proposed design strategy and functional program.

ADS2 final project will be on a case study chosen within AUIC school educational program Ri-formare Periferie | Milano Metropolitana. The proposed topics introduce the nexus between the different scales of the project, especially the definition of the relationship between an architectural object and its context (architectural shape and urban morphology), typology and to the deepening of architectural elements of both open and built-up spaces.

The modifying pressures moved by the project design have to be interpreted reading the pre-existent stratified context layers (the allotment and its surroundings) investigating its particular morphology and character. Students will face so the challenge of re-establishing a new balance by designing a contemporary architecture that has to regain continuity with a given cultural context. Students will be also invited to consider the shape of the architectural issue and above all its meaning regarding both local culture and the new sustainability applied aspects.

Students will be invited to take into account both technical aspects such as influence of design on a complex environment or its feasibility and expressive aspects, related to the quality of space, shapes and materials used in the architectural design. The architecture will be defined by the articulation and quality of spaces, relationship between built-up and open space, indoor and outdoor spaces, utility contents, typological and technical-constructive issues up to the scale of the detail.

The Architectural Design Studio 2 will guide the students’ design process step by step thanks to a multidisciplinary teaching method that will merge Architectural design, Structural mechanics and Technological design architecture all along the Design studio-project activities also with the introduction of case studies analysis, lectures, and exercises.

Deepening on Structural mechanics aims at providing coverage of the major topics in structural analysis and design with particular focus on structural behaviour and design issues. It begins with a self-contained, non-mathematical overview of the fundamental concepts of structural analysis and design, and then examines, individually, the common structural types used in buildings (e.g., trusses, beams, arches/cables), discussing each mainly in terms of qualitative analysis and then design method; the topics will be illustrated with example analyses of real structures

In the within of Technological design architecture subject, students are called to respond to the relationships between urban environment-built environment and light-massive as characterizing elements of the technological constructive nodes and their architectonic design with attention to sustainable features and the use of high-innovative value building materials.

Articulation of the work (Segal Method exercise and Ri-formare Periferie Final project)

The activity of the Design studio-project involves the definition of design contents at different levels of representation, from the most general to detail, and the formal definition of architecture in relation to quality of the spaces, figurative options, materials, structures, techniques.

The architectural design – intended as a cognitive process, transformative act and formal synthesis of spatial, utilitarian, technical contents of the inhabited space – operates by switching contexts, shaping places, interpreting and moving forward options on the delicate relationship between new design and existing context. The course will start with a Segal Method exercise and, then, the architectural design work articulated in four levels of detail:

- Segal Method exercises

- descriptions, interpretation and analysis (morphology, historical development, climate, etc.) of the context;

- elaboration of design strategies at the scale of the context;

- definition of design results at the architectural scale (built-up and open space relationships, interior and exterior spaces definition, typologies, structures, layout organization and vertical connections, program, etc.);

- technological constructive nodes, details, materials, performance, etc.

The teaching structure

The Studio activity consists of ex-cathedra lectures on the main topics related to different subjects (Architectural design, Structural mechanics and Technological design architecture), case-studies multidisciplinary analysis, preparatory exercises, design work and any additional activities proposed by the professors (plot survey, educational trips, seminars, etc.). Students will be constantly guided during the design work, from the concept to the final design.

The project will be carried out in small groups under the supervision of Professors and Tutors. Seminars will be held for discussion and evaluation of the design work for each phase (description of the context, development of design strategies, design definition to the architectural scale together with technological constructive nodes and details).

It is required to students to develop in a complete and correct way all the steps and drawings, paying attention to both graphical representation and theoretical and technical argumentation.

Thematic literatures will be indicated at the beginning of the course and after the lessons as well as the detailed program of the design work. The basic teaching materials will be published on "Beep".


During the educational path the sequence of the courses and the order of registration of the related exam must follow the priority specified in the study programme regulation.

Modalità di valutazione

The final evaluation will take into account the results of all the activities developed during the Studio: Exam and Final Project, all Design Phases, Intermediate and Final Seminars, Exercises, Tests and Presentations. It will also take in account the commitment put into the design process, the maturation of the student’s ability in making judgments, in applying knowledge and understanding, the interest for explained arguments, the study of recommended texts, the communication and learning skills.

Consistency and completeness of the work, awareness and ability to articulate the theoretical and critic findings, correct representation, ability to develop architectural design will be the focus of the evaluation of the final project.

The correct development of assigned tasks like Exercises and Design work will be evaluated during specific seminars that are mandatory; Tests and Presentations will be evaluated during the course. All the intermediate results will be communicated and the schedule of all the activities will be explained at the beginning of the course. Attendance and reviews of the work will be recorded.

During the Architectural Design Studio 2 regular and continuous attendance is required. Only students who will have the number of attendances required by the AUIC School Regulations and who will have completed on time and with a positive evaluation all the assigned activities will be admitted to the final exam.
