053281 - ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO 2
In the Architectural Design Studio the student experiments in-depth study of topics related to innovative and advanced research issues in the specific disciplinary area of reference. The sector concerns paradigms, problems and techniques of advanced design in relationship with the environmental transformations. Special attention will be given to the formal structure of the landscape and the elements that compose it, recognizing in geographical conditions and topographical, in environmental diversity and in historical pre-existences, the characters that guarantee the sustainability of transformations. Particular attention is given to infrastructures, public spaces, and disused areas degraded and to the design of open spaces in general.
Innovative Teaching. Blended classromm and shared supervision between Politecnico and Innovative companies: Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia (MyMovies magazine) and a Start-up from Piacenza (Studio Polylight)
Risultati di apprendimento attesi
According to the Dublin Descriptors (DdD), passing the exam certifies the acquisition of the following results:
DdD 1 knowledge and understanding
- knowledge of advanced tools for the project.
DdD 2 ability to apply knowledge and understanding
- advanced ability to transfer theoretical and technical disciplinary knowledge in project development.
DdD 3 (autonomy of judgment), 4 (communication skills) and 5 (learning ability)
- ability to operate and communicate independently the design choices made (DdD 3, 4 and 5)
A contemporary public space between architecture and nature
The core of the Design Studio 2 is the architectural project, oriented to the trasformation of the contemporary urban spaces, with special attention to the problem of the peripherical areas. During the design experience the students will cross different scales, times and fields. The Studio will deal with the matters of landscape, of shapes in space as well as of single building design.
The path is divided into three steps corresponding to three common reviews:
Measures and sequences. This step looks at promote local transformations able to build a connected series of landscapes. The process will start with the visit of the area and aims to tackle urgent problems, through strategic and discrete actions, highlighting the critical places and their potentiality. The students will regard to a design approach focused on the experience of the landscape, realizing the proposal of a 'narration' able to design a new path through the city.
Design strategy. The ideas developed during the first step are oriented to define a principle of interference with the soil. The object of work is the design of an eco-museum, placed in a focal point of a contemporary city, involved in the architectural and urban transformation of the settlement. Students will develop a proposal able to link the reasons and the memory inscribed in the site peculiarity.
Focus on details. The third phase is more oriented on the elements of architecture, materials and design architecture. Within this phase we will focus on the construction process of a contemporary and innovative museum. It is interpreted as a complex organism, dynamic, smart and interactive, oriented to the archiving, distribution and circulation (real and digital) of the scientific and humanistic knowledge. Therefore, the museum will be intended as a multifunctional organism, focused on the relationship between the architectural construction and the external spaces, between private and collective, between open, covered and indoor space.
“Landscape Aesthetics” module aims at framing the “landscape” in a multidisciplinary perspective – in between philosophy and architecture – considering both the role of the visible and the “invisible” elements involved in the concept. On the one hand, this leads to the consideration of the local and social habits, the traditions that originate the landscape in its cultural and historical sense. On the other hand, it takes to the role of the multisensory scenario – sounds, smells, tactile elements etc. – in the interpretation of our relationship with the space. A special investigation will focus on themes such as the “soundscape”, the “atmosphere”, the “sphere”, pointing out their importance for the architectural design.
Innovative aspects: Blanded classromm + co-relation with external companies (Poly light startup + MyMovies). The teaching shows a high degree of innovation.
Through the 'blanded classroom' method, the Studio will provide:
-materials capable of processing digital and interactive maps
-video able to give detailed information;
Both the materials and the videos and the tools will be provided to the students so that they can work and rework them autonomously and in a team and will be supported by practical classroom design exercises) with the professors and tutors, with whom they will implement and apply the techniques previously learned, also through 'transversal' strategies and methodologies. The action will also make use of the specific contribution of a Start up, especially as regards the most closely linked virtual modeling activity, aimed at returning 'creative products', with a high level of advanced technology + Magazine MyMovies (Director: Giancarlo Zappoli), regarding the issues related to urban representation and relations with the Experimental Center of Cinematography of Milan (Reference: Professor Bartolomeo Corsini)
Modalità di valutazione
The evaluation will be carried out taking into account the quality of the project developed and the ability of the student to present it with reference to the topics and themes dealt with in the Studio. The final evaluation will be determined by the contents of the project, by the candidates' exhibition capacity and by the student's work through all the Studio.
