Programma dettagliato e risultati di apprendimento attesi

The SJTU Summer School is the ideal framework for reflection and debate on the current characteristics of sustainable, resilient cities; In this scenario, a sector of the city will be evaluated, their urbanistic, architectural, landscape, environmental, economic and social features. the participants in the course will be trained in useful topics for their academic projects and their professional performance from an interdisciplinary vision and related to processes of rational intervention of the city.

The SJTU Summer School will promote a shared international debate where students from different Universities will reflect on new transformation scenarios for core areas of Shanghai. Which processes and new uses can strength and give thickness to the modification of the area? This workshop aims to define a series of new scenarios that can be modified and structured in different times and phases. Time, uses, and scales of the project represent therefore central issues in this strategic approach in order to define a complex scenario that must take in count the various (and possible) actors involved. Teachers and students from all universities involved will work together during two weeks of debates, lectures, critiques and workshop design activities.

Objectives and Expected Learning Outcomes:

  • Introduce new dimensions or ways of doing urban interventions emphasizing the real, through research and architectural design to generate an accurate detection and solution of real problems through participatory observation and critical reasoning.
  • Develop a work that approaches an execution scale where it is specified, with the detail and the required precision, the dimensioning of all the components, the materials and their specifications. All this on a part of the project of adequate dimension to be addressed in the teaching times in which the workshop is structured.
  • Learn methodologies and strategies for surveying and analyzing the buildings and / or urban fragments that will be intervened and their urban-landscape and temporal context.
  • Encourage students to recognize the problems to be addressed, through the learning of ethnography, observation, community approaching methods.
  • Explain different theories and case studies to recognize their origin, need, evolution, success and failures. Thus, providing the students with the criteria and conceptual tools to approach the design challenge.
  • Encourage the participation and debate of students in class as a mean of learning.
