Objective of the course is to provide the student with an overview on fuels from fossil and renewable sources including feedstocks, conversion routes and characterization and combustion performances.

As expcted learning targets, the student matures several competences as herein detailed.
Knowledge and comprehension: - the student knows the fundamentals on the chemical characterization of oil, fossil fuels, renewable fuels; - the student knows the refinery processes for the production of logistic fuels; - the students knows the classification and the production processes of renewable fuels; - the student knows the fundamentals on the characterization and combustion properties of fossil and renewable fuels.
Ability to apply knowledge and comprehension: - the student is able to analyse the kinetic/termodynamic/economic factors that govern the production processes of fuels; - the student is able to quantify the expected performance of a combustion system (in terms of energy efficiency and environmental impact).
Autonomy of judgement: - the student has the tools for critically analyze existing process solutions and develop improved solutions;
Learning ability: - the student has the ability to extend the backgroud knowledge to the design of new processes.
Part I – fuel from fossil sources
Origin and characterization of crude oil. Origin and formation of crude oil – Types of reservoirs and statistical data -Basics of organic chemistry (hydrocarbon classification, functional groups, O- S. compounds). Chemical and physical properties of crude oil: viscosity, specific gravity (API gravity, K-fraction, correlation index) – distillation curves (ASTM, TBP, EFV). Smoke point and char value. Sulfur and heteroatoms contents, inorganic fraction (water and salts).
Oil to fuel Refinery flow sheet. Physical separation and chemical conversion. Topping and vacuum distillation. Hydrotreating, hydrocracking, Fluid Catalytic Cracking, Catalytic Reforming, Isomerization, Alkylation.
Part II – fuel from renewables
Classification of Biofuels (feedstocks, logistics and sustainability)
Bioethanol from starches and sugars (wheat, corn, sugar cane, sugar beet)
Biodiesel from edible vegetal oils (rapeseed oil,soybean oil, palm oil)
Biogas from wastes
Bioethanol from cellulose
Biodiesel from non-edible oils (jatropha)
Fuels from algae
From feedstock to fuels conversion routes
Thermochemical conversion routes
Biomass and waste gasification and syngas conversion (CH3OH, DME, FT)
Pyrolysis of biomass and upgrading of biocrude
Biochemical conversion routes
Bioethanol from sugars: fermentation and dehydration
Bioethanol from cellulose: Biomass pretreatment
Biodiesel from vegetable oil: transesterification; Oxydehydrogenation
Biomethane from biogas: cleaning and CO2 removal
CO2 to methanol and DME
Part III – Characterization and combustion performances of fossil and renewable fuels (1.5 CFU)
(e.g., physical properties, combustion properties, energy density, emission performances, …)
Modalità di valutazione
The exam will be oral.
In the examination, the student will be asked general questions on the topics of the course, to verify the knowledge and comprehension of chemical characterizations, refinery/production processes and combustion properties of fossil and renewable fuels. The interview will also verify the ability of the student to critically apply the general background matured to the quantitative analysis of specific cases including kinetic/termodynamic/economic factors and the evaluation of energy efficiency and environmental impact of combustion processes.
