The course provides tools to understand electro-heating devices. The course deals with the criteria for connection of furnaces into LV, MV and HV networks.

Lectures and exercise sessions will allow students to (DdD1, DdD3 and DdD4):
understand the function of electro-heating devices,
define the architecture electro-heating devices,
analyze the main working problem of electro-heating devices.
The project laboratory will allow students to (DdD1, DdD2 and DdD4):
write a document in order to understand the electro-heating devices,
learn all the concepts to use design an electro-heating device,
work in group,
summarize and present the results achieved during the final exam.
The main argument of the course are: General considerations of the Electro-heating devices classification. Technical Comparison. Arc furnaces. Characteristics of Electric Arc. Representative Models. Electric Circuit Model of Furnace. Continuous Mode of Operation. Fundamental Relations. Typical problems due to arc-furnace connection to the power network. Reactive power compensation in arc-furnace. Induction furnaces, resistance furnaces, and dielectric heating. Microwave Owen. Typical problems due to furnace connection to the power network.
A project laboratory is integral part of the course. The objective of projects is to help students in applying the approaches and principles tought in class. Projects will be defined through the semester. Project artifact are expected to be released at fixed deadline that will be defined during the course. The evaluation of projects will be based on the produced artifacts. The project laboratory will be discussed during the oral exam.
Students are required to know the principles of electrical engeenering and methods to simulate and design electrical device
Modalità di valutazione
After the end of the course, students can participate to the final examination.
The final examination consists on an oral part.
The oral part generally consists in 3 or 4 questions on all the topics covered by the course. Students should demonstrate full comprehension of the subjects and the usage of the appropriate technical (DdD1, DdD2, DdD3 and DdD4).
Additionally the oral evaluation can be integrated by a project. The project has to be evaluated before the first available date ot the exam.
