052803 - PRODUCTION FOR MADE IN ITALY LAB
Obiettivi dell'insegnamento
Many sectors of Made in Italy are facing new important challenges entailing the need of a wider point of view considering the product, the process and the system together with their continuous evolution. In particular high-value-added products, in line with the peculiarity of the excellence of Made in Italy, and a specific focus on the continuous innovation and the sustainability will be the main pillars of this course.
The aim of the course is to provide the students an opportunity to face real problems in real manufacturing environments, characterized by significant challenges (e.g. new products to be produced, zero-waste and sustainable solutions to be introduced, personalization of products).
The students will have the opportunity to take advantage of industrial engineering methods and tools as well as experimental activities learned during their study course and experience their own approach to solve a real industrial problem through the “action-based learning” approach used in the “learning factory”.
Moreover, working in a group and interact with a company will aim at enabling and improving the capability of the students to interact in a professional environment in a responsible and constructive way planning and coordinating their work.
The course fits into the overall program curriculum pursuing some of the defined general learning goals. In particular, the course contributes to the development of the following capabilities:
Design solutions applying a scientific and engineering approach (Analysis, Learning, Reasoning, and Modeling capability deriving from a solid and rigorous multidisciplinary background) to face problems and opportunities in a business and industrial environment
Develop new ideas and solutions in business and industrial scenarios evolving over time
Interact in a professional, responsible, effective and constructive way in a working environment, also motivating group members
Risultati di apprendimento attesi
Analyze and model a real industrial problem in a real environment, understanding the relevant elements and influencing factors, defining proper modelling hypothesis, collecting information and data. (DdD3)
Select and apply industrial engineering methodologies to a real industrial case coping with incomplete and/or unreliable information and data. (DdD 2 and 3)
Work and cooperate in a team and interact with a company (DdD4)
Plan and manage their work grounding on the intermediate results and the evolution of the context (DdD3 and 5)
Explain, communicate and motivate the work done (DdD4)
Argomenti trattati
Starting from a real industrial case, a set of engineering problems will be defined, addressing the range of typical problems a manufacturing company has to face and, specifically, those involving the interdependency and co-evolution of products, processes and production system. Possible framework engineering problems will be:
The design and reconfiguration of a manufacturing plant.
Evaluate the impact of a new or modified product.
The introduction of a new process technology.
These manufacturing problems will be addressed in a multidisciplinary way by a group of students spending about 5 weeks in a company, with the aim at exploiting the tools and methods learned to analyze, formalize and provide a solution to it. The following activities will provide support to the activities:
Industrial Internship: all the students will be given the opportunity to spend a period of about 100 hours in the company proposing the manufacturing problem under study. The period will be organized as an internship through the Career Service. The companies involved in the previous years are (ABB, Cosberg, ATV, Relight, ATM)
Seminars/Lectures: A set of seminars/lectures will be organized to deepen all the technological and management aspects connected to the problem under study. Seminars/lectures will possibly involve industrial people working in the specific field connected to the problem under study.
Lab experience: Specific problems will be addressed by the students by directly using the facilities of the Manufacturing Lab of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and in other ancillary facilities working in close relation with Politecnico di Milano.
Real data modelling and analysis: Data collected in real industrial contexts will be provided and used to design and/or validate the solutions provided.
Prerequisiti
Industrial engineering methods and tools addressed in the previous courses.
An assessment exercise for soft-skills and group-work attitudes is suggested (check the offer provided by the Career Service).
Modalità di valutazione
The assessment for the course is operated by means of:
A report related to the project work. (group, learning outcome 1-2-4-5)
An intermediate and final presentation of the work done including a final video. (individual, learning outcome 5)
A report provided by the company hosting the internship. (individual, learning outcome 3-4)
