Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The purpose of the Course is to develop a deep and critical knowledge of the problems and methodologies related to the renovation and energy retrofit of existing buildings.

The aims of the Studio teamwork are to enhance students’ active participation and creativity in order to develop original and feasible ideas for the renovation and reuse of existing buildings.

The Course and Studio in Building renovation will be coordinated with the activites developed in the parallel courses of the term.

Expected learning outcomes are:

  • Ability to analyze existing constructions and define a program of adaptive reuse;
  • Ability to define strategies to regenerate abandoned buildings;
  • Ability to develope complex building renovation projects;
  • Ability to integrate knowledge learned in the parallele courses;
  • Ability to organize a teamwork;
  • Ability to present ideas and projects to experts.

Argomenti trattati

The course in Building Renovation has three main goals:

  • The first one concerns the knowledge of traditional construction techniques used in the past, aimed at understanding the causes of building deterioration. It concerns also the knowledge of best practice to adapt and repair existing buildings.
  • The second one concerns the process of reuse and regeneration of existing buildings, starting from a SWOT approach. Many international and Italian case histories about cultural and industrial heritage, and residential blocks upgrade will be presented.
  • The third one concerns the design methodology of energy retrofit. The theme of sustainability, energy efficiency and passive design strategies for building refurbishment will be thoroughly investigated.

The main topics are:

  • Building renovation process and low emission strategy;
  • Adaptive reuse process. Analysis to define new functions for existing buildings;
  • Main traditional construction technologies - 19th - 20th centuries;
  • Renovation design strategies: "building on the already built";
  • Sustainable building assessment: renovation process;
  • Sustainable building retrofit: passive design strategies.

The studio in Building Renovation is strictly connected to the Course. During the term the students, organized in teams, will design an architectural renovation and energy retrofit of an existing industrial heritage, developed in parallel with the other courses offered in the same semester. 

Renovation project will have a multidisciplinary approach, including urban and architectural design amd the description of enigeering choices, in order to propose feasible and sustainable reuse of the given buildings.

Many examples will be presented during the course and studio.

 


Prerequisiti

It is recommended to have the following knowledge:

  • Technical drawing and use of adequate software;
  • Construction technology;
  • Design methods.

Modalità di valutazione

The individual evaluation will be based on:

  • Attention and active partecipation in the activities;
  • Contribution to the whole project;
  • Two individual tests during the term;
  • First team presentation of the project;
  • Team project and final presentation;
  • Oral exam.
