Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The course “Building and Construction Technologies” aims at showing how a building can be made and how a deep knowledge of technical characteristics can improve considerably its efficient management. Therefore, the first target is the comprehension of the building itself, starting from the classification of its different systems, components and spaces. Then the analysis of each single stage of the entire building process will help in individualizing the proper increase of information to handle along the life-cycle of a facility. The third target is to find out the closed relationship among building performances, behaviour over time and technological issues. Then, the forth target is to manage the different variables that can have occurred along the life-cycle of a constructed asset, thanks to the analysis of each different aspect that can modify the behaviour of a built environment (such as the used materials, the adopted technologies, and in general the result of a meeting point among choices by different involved stakeholders). Eventually, this will permit achieving a deep knowledge of the construction techniques and of the criteria which underly their choice in different situations, allowing students to find out how to manage built assets, according to the adopted technologies

Each topic will be treated both theoretically and practically through a project work, exploiting different tools for active learning and in general applying some methodologies of innovative teaching.

Risultati di apprendimento attesi

Lectures and exercise sessions will allow students to:

- remember each single stage belonging to the building process;

- analyse a building, breaking it down in its functional areas, spaces and delimiting components;

- analyse building components, breaking them down in their layers and constituting materials;

- define the different function that a building component has to satisfy;

- analyse the different functions provided by each different layer belonging to a specific building component;

- identify the shown building and construction technology.


The project laboratory will allow students to:

- classify each single space and component belonging to a building;

- analyse every building component, describing the belonging layers and materials;

- choose the most proper building technology according to the provided requirements;

- compose new cross sections of building components in order to achieve further requirements;  

- find out the most proper modelling way to represent these cross sections;

- integrate different technical solutions in order to properly manage the mix of different technologies;

- write a project report where every  taken choice is argued and clearly explained;

- summarize and present the results achieved during the analysis and specification activities.

Argomenti trattati

The most common building technologies will be investigated and their relationships with the whole building performances will be studied.

Moreover, cross-sections of main components and building details of different elements of the building will be deeply analysed.

Among the main subjects of the lessons, existing building components classifications, the basic requirements of a building, the most common type of structures, façades, roofs, walls and slabs, but also the use of digital tools to manage building technologies information and models will be presented. A particular attention will be paid on showing how building and construction technologies contribute in energy efficiency and sustainability, underlining how a proper building design and management can contribute in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goal number 11 "SUSTAINABLE CITIES AND COMMUNITIES" (SDG 11).

A project laboratory is integral part of the course. The objective of projects is to help students in applying the approaches and principles presented in class lessons. A teamwork will be required on a case study that will be assigned at the beginning of the semester. Deliverables are expected to be reviewed at fixed deadlines that will be defined at the beginning of the course. The evaluation of projects will be based on reviews, submitted report and drawings, and on the final presentation.


No pre-requisite is required.

Modalità di valutazione

Students will have to take a final written exam at the end of the semester to assess the knowledge of the

contents covered in the lessons and included in the bibliography. This written exam at the end of the course will be a multiple choice questions test (i.e. 3 possible answers given, only one is correct and you have to indicate the correct one with a “X”). It will be compulsory for everyone and it will be considered passed only for marks equal or higher than 18.

Moreover, as students will also to be evaluated on their capability to apply practically the studied technologies, the project developed by each teamwork during the lab activities. The evaluations will take into account the modalities of interaction and the results of the work carried out in the project exercises, of the individual and team work skills, ways of representing and presenting project work. Therefore, the evaluation of projects will be based on reviews, submitted report and drawings, and on the final presentation. A final mark for this practice development will be given to each student.

A mathematical average between the written test mark and the teamwork project evaluation will generate the final mark that will be registered. 

For those students who cannot attend the lab or who won’t receive a positive evaluation from it, the capability to apply the content explained in the theoretical lessons will be evaluated with a compulsory oral test that will be arrange immediately after a positive evaluation of the written test. Even in this case, the final mark that will be registered will be calculated as a mathematical average between the written test mark and the oral exam one.
