The context proposed in the studio is one of the many cases of “urban-rural continuum” in China, located in the Chengdu “historical irrigation system plane” whose specific form is the “linpan” – a kind of village that integrates in huge units both agriculture, woods and traditional housing. The linpan in the area form a continuous network in which are located villages (cun), towns (zhen) and small cities (xian). The contemporary fast urban development in China, based on intensive development of urban blocks of great cities is threating the integrity of the rural side of such “continuum”. In the studio will be developed experimental design referring to urban planning scale as well as architectural scale.
In a first phase, rural-urban continuum will be considered as made of planning units for which will be checked possible density increase, infrastructural implementation respecting the ecological structure of Chengdu plane irrigation system in a way to identify an alternative to current development based on “opposition” instead of “integration” rural-urban. Issues related to this design task at territorial/urban scale will be investigated in the teaching units of prof. Giuseppe Cinà “Urban design”. These issues will concern the following topics: urban and rural land use, settlements’ morphology, balance among the central functions, preservation of historic values in a frame of sustainable development. scale will be investigated in the teaching of prof. In a second phase, on the base of the territorial and local planning units identified in the first phase, will be conducted pilot projects based on the research of specific new building types able to satisfy the requirement of “new urban forms” respecting the “urban-rural continuum” historical structure. The experimental design of new building type will face both facilities, residential and work units. Issues related to this design task at architectural/urban scale will be investigated in the teaching of prof. Chen Zhen “Architecture and urban design”.
The general topic will be introduced by lectures on:
- Urban-rural continuum as specific form of settlement in China;
- Experimental design conducted in the past years studios on Hakka and Minnan culture urban-rural continuum respectively in Huizhou/Huiyang (Guangdong) and Zhangzhou/Xiamen/Qianzhou (Fujian);
- Linpan as unique village form in China and its critical development in contemporary urbanisation processes in China. Problems of management, restoration and revitalisation of a traditional type;
- The “Green City” as a form of settlement alternative to industrial metropolis in modern age: from Ledoux and Jefferson to Ford and Olivetti, from the “green city” of Moscow to the “Tennessee Valley Authority planning adventure”, from Amos Edallo’s “ruralism” to Marcello d’Olivo’s “ecotown-ecoway”;
- The role of urban and peri-urban agriculture in making a productive and sustainable green city;
- The South Milan Agricultural Park, a leading experience to address a greener metropolitan area;
- The Regional Parks system in Lombardy as a form of “green city”.
The studio activities will be coordinated with “studios” and the “Centre for heritage” of South-West Jiaotong University in Chengdu applied to the same context and Deyuan Town and You’ai Town in Chengdu plane.
