053009 - THEMATIC STUDIO
The Studio addresses the question of the Architectural Design, at the various scales, in its complexity and multi-disciplinary nature. The studio experience, which integrates the various disciplines that contribute to design education, teaches students, in theory and in practice, to develop and formulate original ideas, including in a research context.
During these studios, students must demonstrate, through an independent formulation of a project, that they are able to develop highly innovative solutions, mastering the entire design procedure and the multiple skills called into play. Indeed, students will be required to develop original solutions to topics that architects are faced with due to increasingly complex problems on the European and international horizon.
Risultati di apprendimento attesi
- acquire knowledge and comprehension skills that provide them with awareness of the experimental work involved in design and express and apply original ideas in this area;
- be capable of developing design solutions coherent with the location and context, even in highly complex urban environments;
- be able to develop highly innovative solutions, mastering the entire design procedure and the multidisciplinary knowledge they have acquired.
Place-identity is a dynamic process of unending construction and reinvention. Architectural design and research should express a critical approach towards the challenges and global processes affecting the identity of historical urban landscapes. Design can be a crucial tool of knowledge, challenging the responsibility of a critical interpretation of settlement’s forms and past seen as a precondition for both conservation, regeneration, and development of their parts.
The Studio’s design projects will tackle the relationship between the Old and the New through the theme of “reconnection” between the historic settlement and the modern development, and the theme of the “edge” between rural-urban landscape, controlling a whole landscape section and involving a multi-scale approach integrating multiple challenges of the built environment. Applying to the case study of a Chinese historic town, students will confront with the extremes conditions of local and global phenomena, facing present dynamics of transformation of heritage and cultural rural landscapes –now at the risk of further alterations related to their touristic exploitation–, in which the very survival of the last authentic testimonies of a civilization is at stake. In the Italian case study, we will deal with an outskirt area belonging to the “Ri-formare Periferie” project, where regeneration also require an integrated approach to architectural design, heritage enhancement, public spaces and landscape as a whole.
The teaching consists of lectures, analysis exercises and design combining theoretical and practical work. Architectural design will arise from the mutual relationship between the urban structure and the building, showing the awareness of a reading and design strategy integrating heritage enhancement and new sustainable construction of prototypes, within a comprehensive strategy of regeneration of the whole historic landscape.
Concepts and methods for reading building and places as historically, culturally, and stratified contexts will be introduced to provide interpretative and design tools to support the urban landscape strategy. Lectures on architectural composition issues, design themes, and case studies will also constitute a basis to deepen the architectural design.
As far as conservation of buildings and landscape is concerned, the teaching uses as reference some international methodological approaches, modified in relationship with local specificities of the case study, focusing on sustainable conservation and development of places.
The activity focusing on building physics will provide students with methodology and tools to support the design for low carbon communities in the framework of “rurban” regeneration processes. Special emphasis will be given on the rational use of energy and the use of low energy technologies and renewable energy sources in the design process. Case studies will be presented and discussed.
The design work is developed from four intersecting activities:
At landscape scale, reading of physical characteristics, interpretation of its tangible and intangible cultural values, evaluation of problems and opportunities, definition of landscape quality aims;
At urban scale, mapping of the design context, reading typologies, morphologies, topographies and the historical layering while understanding and analysing present transformations;
At building scale, analysis of the different types and their phases of construction, survey of material characteristics and the present reality of buildings highlighting their state of conservation, decay and reuse criticalities;
At building physics level, development of an environmental conscious approach in the building energy design (envelope and technical systems) though concepts and advanced design tools.
All those activities will converge in the design of a landscape section where students can choose between 2 topics related to the relationship between the old and the new: design enhancement for heritage and urban spaces; new prototypes for sustainable development of the rurban landscape.
Specific bibliography (books chapters, papers, articles) complementing the general course bibliography will be suggested by the teachers during the course.
Yearly workshop/internship and grant The studio is integrated with the Double Master Degree Programme in partnership with Tsinghua Univesity and Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology (China), as well as the exchange programme with Southeast University. This allow participation to the yearly workshop in China, substituting an elective course, which enables deepening on-site knowledge, especially for the ones interested to continue the work as a thesis project. As a form of "innovative teaching" and with the cooperation of Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology, students can apply for a grant and workshop of teaching classes combined with internship in local design institutes.
Modalità di valutazione
The studio work is organised through subsequent assignment to check on the progress of students’ works, such as term exercises, maquette studies, and mid-term workshop presentations, each targeted on specific goals concerning the design proposal.
Attendance to ex-cathedra lectures, presentation of the group/individual work, and participation in discussions are compulsory. Active and constant participation in weekly reviews, collective discussions and workshops, as well as mid-term analytical works and exercises works evaluated during the semester will contribute to the final evaluation.
The final evaluation is centred on the design project, and will take into consideration the general learning skills and progress made, knowledge and understanding demonstrated through the application to the case study and design work, the capability of making judgements based on knowledge, and the communication skills in relation to the contents. Specifically, it will consist of evaluating the quality and depth of the design work, the understanding demonstrated through the analysis work and design achievements of each working group (mid-term exercises, mapping, booklets, design, drawings and models), as well as in testing individually the student’s knowledge, understanding and presentation skills (critical awareness on the contents and theoretical issues covered in the Studio programme as well as on related bibliographical subjects).
