094827 - UNDERGROUND EXCAVATIONS
Obiettivi dell'insegnamento
The course intends to provide the concepts necessary for the application of soil/rock mechanics in the field of underground constructions. These concepts include methodological/theoretical aspect, use of numerical approaches and methods for field/laboratory investigation, techniques of excavation/construction.
Risultati di apprendimento attesi
It is expected that the students attending this course will reach a sufficient knowledge for understanding the relevant aspects of tunnel engineering problems and for applications in design practice.
Argomenti trattati
- Geological and engineering classifications of rocks. Some remarks on clay minerals.
- Laboratory tests on intact rock samples
- Failure criteria
- Shear resistance of rock samples containing planes of weakness
- Time dependent behavior of rocks
- Rock sampling
- Rock mass classification systems
- In situ tests
- In situ stress state
- Joints in rock masses
- Tunneling techniques
- Stress analysis oftunnels
- Elastic and elastic-plastic solutions
- Convergence-Confinement method
- Limit equilibrium methods
- Tunnels in squeezing and swelling rocks
- Tunnels below the water table
- Finite element analysis of tunnels
Prerequisiti
In addition to attend the classes of this course, the students should have a fair background in soil mechanics, structural mechancs, hydraulics and a basic knowledge of the finite element method.
Modalità di valutazione
The exam consists of an oral discussion of topics relevant to the course.
During this discussion the students are expected to show a fair knowledge of the concepts/methods illustrated in the course and the ability to apply them in the solution of engineering problems.
The students who intend to take the exam must sign up at least 3 working days before the date of the exam using the procedure available in the Politecnico website. The students who, after signing up, decide not to take the exam are asked to inform the teacher (e.g. by e-mail) at least 2 days before the date of the exam.
