Insegnamento 096721 - STRUCTURAL FASTENERS
Docente Muciaccia Giovanni
Cfu 6.00 Tipo insegnamento Monodisciplinare

Corso di Studi Codice Piano di Studio preventivamente approvato Da (compreso) A (escluso) Insegnamento

Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The course deals with theory and design of connections between structural elements. After recalling basic principles of connections in concrete and steel structures, the main focus will be on post-installed fastenings, whose relevance is growing continuously in retrofit and restoration works, especially in seismic regions. Additionally, since the behavior of such connections may be strongly product dependent, student will be introduced to design and assessing by testing, also through practical experience in the laboratory.

Risultati di apprendimento attesi

Students will become confident with the design of fastening to concrete and masonry.

More specifically, the development of a design project will allow students to define and write a complete calculation report in a real design scenario, where the definition and choice of the structural solution is also a function of interaction with other disciplines.

Additionally, the laboratory activity and related project will lead students to produce a complete report related to the testing activity and to successively provide an intepretation of the obtained results.

Argomenti trattati

The topics addressed in the course are:

  1. Concrete to concrete connections: design with strut and tie models, anchorages and laps, detailing of D-zones.
  2. Steel to steel connections: design assumptions, rotational capacity and rotational stiffness of uniplanar joint. Beam-to-column joints, column bases and splices.
  3. Steel to concrete connections: derivation of forces acting on fasteners according to both elastic and plastic approaches, verifications at ultimate and serviceability limit states, design of supplementary reinforcement.
  4. Post-installed fasteners: types and operating principles, behavior under seismic action, exposure to fire, redundant systems for non-structural applications (e.g. façades, ceilings).
  5. Other types of connections: introduction to timber-to-timber connections, fastening to masonry and fixing of glass elements.
  6. Design assisted by testing: derivation of design values, statistical determination of resistance models, experimental procedures for assessing and judging the fitness of fasteners for an intended use.

Tutorials will be initially focused on the design of connections according to the existing design provisions of Eurocodes. In a second phase students will be asked to analyze real design issues, providing solutions and verifications in a final calculation report.

Students will directly recognize and study the failure modes of post-installed connections in the laboratory. Successively they will be asked to design a real experiment to determine by testing the capacity of a real system. The results will be included in a test report.

Internships and thesis

Students will have the chance of applying for internal of external internships. The latter will be provided by anchor manufacturing companies acting at European level and they will presented on the Beep page of the course. Internship may also be carried out in connection with the final thesis work.

A basic knowledge related to design of reinforced concrete and steel structures is suggested.

Modalità di valutazione

Students may be admitted after submission of a design report and of a test report. Both reports will be discussed and reviewed during the course.

The final exam is oral and it can be taken at any of the dates which will be reported in the exams schedule. During the exam a review of main design choices and verifications will represent the basis for a wider discussion. Analogously, the personal interpretation of the student of the obtained test results will be discussed.
