097738 - NETWORK AUTOMATION AND PROTECTION SYSTEMS; TOOLS FOR NETWORK SIMULATION
The course provides tools for the operation of distribution grids with respect to automation strategies and protection systems. The course deals with the criteria for design and protection systems and automation strategies in order to efficiently locate and select the faults (short-circuits, ground faults, etc.) for LV, MV and HV networks. The course provides the skills for the use of tools for modeling and planning of LV, MV and HV networks.
Risultati di apprendimento attesi
Lectures and exercise sessions will allow students to (DdD1, DdD3 and DdD4):
understand the protection funtionalities adopted in LV, MV and HV networks
define the architecture of LV, MV and HV networks
analyze the protection automation strategies in LV, MV and HV network
The project laboratory will allow students to (DdD1, DdD2 and DdD4):
write a document in order to understand the protection strategies in MV network
learn all the concepts to use correctly a software for simulating a distribution grid
analyze software code written by others
work in group
summarize and present the results achieved during the final exam
The main argument of the course are in the following:
Neutral earthing in distribution networks: different methods for neutral earthing for MV networks (Unearthed Neutral System, Solid Neutral Earthed System, Resistance Neutral Earthing System), and for LV networks (isolated, grounded).
Protection systems and automation strategies for detecting MV faults: criteria for the selection of circuit breakers or disconnectors, protection functions and the relevant regulation, peripheral equipment.
Protection systems and automation strategies for detecting LV faults: criteria for the selection of circuit breakers, protection functions and the relevant regulation, peripheral equipment.
Automation strategies: procedures for detection and automatic selection of the faults on distribution network elements, both in case of single-phase and poly-phase faults.
Selectivity coordination with the users’ protections: protection systems necessary for the proper management of users’ plant; protections of the users’ plant interface and coordination with the Distribution Operator protection systems.
Tools for the operation and planning of the networks: use and application of dedicated software for modeling electrical networks, and accuracy of the simulation systems.
A project laboratory is integral part of the course. The objective of projects is to help students in applying the approaches and principles tought in class. Projects will be defined through the semester. Project artifact are expected to be released at fixed deadline that will be defined during the course. The evaluation of projects will be based on the produced artifacts (documentation, code, …). The project laboratory will be discussed during the oral exam.
Students are required to know the principles of electrical engeenering and methods to simulate electrical networks
Modalità di valutazione
After the end of the course, students can participate to the final examination.
The final examination consists on an oral part.
The oral part generally consists in 3 or 4 questions on all the topics covered by the course. Students should demonstrate full comprehension of the subjects and the usage of the appropriate technical (DdD1, DdD2, DdD3, and DdD4).
Additionally the oral evaluation can be integrated by a project. The project has to be evaluated before the first available date ot the exam.
