Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The course fits into the overall program curriculum pursuing some of the defined general learning goals. In particular, the course contributes to the development of the following capabilities:

  • Understand context, functions, processes in a business and industrial environment and the impact of those factors on business performance

  • Design solutions applying a scientific and engineering approach (Analysis, Learning, Reasoning, and Modeling capability deriving from a solid and rigorous multidisciplinary background) to face problems and opportunities in a business and industrial environment

Risultati di apprendimento attesi

At the successful accomplishment of the course the students are expected:

- to be able to understand and describe the networks that underlie the socio-economic environment around them by means of models and instruments of network theory;

- to interpret phenomena such as popularity, rich-get-richer models and  power laws in terms of dynamic network effects, such as information cascades, herdings, tipping points, etc.;

- to predict the likely impact of network structure, network dynamics and strategic interactions on the performance of the business and industrial environment;

- to predict the bargaining power of agents depending on their position in a network;

- to diagram networks using graphs that identify nodes, ties and relationships;

- to model the behavior of agents in a network, depending on network characteristics.

Argomenti trattati

The basic topics analyzed in the course cover five broad areas.

1- Living and doing business in a highly-connected world

2- Social and economic networks analysed with graph theory

3- Markets and strategic Interaction in networks analyzed with game theory

4- Network Dynamics analyzed with population models

5- Network Dynamics analyzed with structural models

The students are expected to accomplish a project in teams of 3-4 members. The project topic is proposed by the students and should include a rigorous analysis of a newtok using advanced analytics from graph theory and game theoretic modeling, as learnt in the course. Applications that relate to the business and industrial environment are particularily welcome.

Prerequisiti

The course requires a good knowledge of Microeconomics.

Knowledge of Game Theory models is also important for this course.

The students that do not feel proficient in the subject can prepare by taking the POK: https://www.pok.polimi.it/courses/course-v1:Polimi+ECON101+2018_M5/about or similar online courses.

Modalità di valutazione
Students that have attended the course (min 80%), are graded as follows:

- student project (in teams of 3-4 members): 70%
- individual student assignment: 30%

The project should be proposed at the end of March and should be completed by the end of May. It is graded individually. The project grade remains valid until the student completes the individual assignment, as part of one of the exam sessions of the summer, fall and/or winter of the same academic year. At the end of the academic year the grade of the student project expires and can no longer be hold as valid.

Students that have not attended the course are graded based on a single written exam that covers all content of the course (100%). Failure at one of the exam sessions does not ban participation to any of the subsequent exam sessions.
