Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

Modern large-scale datacenters require the seamless integration of different components - applications, computation nodes, storage devices, and networks - into one computing infrastructure. The course covers the basics of current datacenters architectures, ranging from the analysis of the single components to the global infrastructure. The focus is on the foundations required to understand the design of computing infrastructures that are scalable, available, secure and flexible at the same time. Virtualization, cloud computing and storage systems are analyzed in depth to show how they can be used to support challenging tasks such as big-data applications and high-performance computing.

Risultati di apprendimento attesi

Students will learn how to:

• understand which hardware and software technologies are available for the cost-effective design and management of a reliable data center

• identify the most critical components in a data center, in terms of dependability and performance requirements

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

•  analyze and comment on the trade-offs between reliability, performance and costs of different hardware and software technologies

• design the architectural layout of both computational and storage components of a data center, in order to satisfy specific service-level requirements

• extend performance and reliability analysis to other types of components in a data center

• apply performance and reliability analysis to other complex systems, even outside the computer engineering domain

Argomenti trattati

• Reliability and availability od datacenters: definitions, fundamental laws, reliability block diagranms

• Scalability and performance of datacenters: definitions, fundamental laws, basic of queuing network theory

• Storage systems: RAID architectures

• Virtualization: basic concepts, technologies, hypervisors, hardware support, vm scheduling

• Cloud Computing: definitions and basic concepts

Basic notions of computer architecture and probability.

Modalità di valutazione

The evaluation consists of a written exam on the topics covered in the course. The exam will include both theoretical questions and exercises. An oral exam can be requested at the discretion of the lecturer in case of doubtful evaluation.

Written test

• Solutions of numerical problems

• Close-ended and Open-ended theoretical questions on course topics

• Exercises: resolution of dependability, storage and virtualization problems

• Exercises: resolution of performance problems

Oral test (requested at the discretion of the lecturer in case of doubtful evaluation)

• Theoretical questions on course topics

• Questions aimed at highlighting the student's ability to develop links between the various topics of the course
