Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The course fits into the overall program curriculum pursuing some of the defined general learning goals. In particular, the course contributes to the development of the following capabilities

  • Identify key methodologies in an Industrial Management context (LG1)
  • Design solutions applying a scientific and engineering approach (Analysis, Learning, Reasoning, and Modeling capability deriving from a solid and rigorous multidisciplinary background) to face problems and opportunities in a business and industrial environment (LG2)

  • Develop new ideas and solutions in business and industrial scenarios evolving over time (LG3)

The course aims at offering an encompassing toolbox, useful to address and solve a large number of problems that Engineers typically face in an Industrial Management context.

Risultati di apprendimento attesi

Through a number of “monographic” problems, students will have the opportunity to develop and strengthen some skills, typically considered as “must-have” for a good consultant in area Operations Management / Operations Improvement. In particular, the student will be able to:

(connected to LG2) rapidly detect a problem and determine the correct data, sifting useless or redundant ones, making simplifying assumptions and focusing on relevant information;

(connected to LG1, LG2 and LG3)  select according to the problem, and then use, a number of general-purpose problem solving tools, to carry with them as a “tool-box” or a “Swiss Army knife” and to use in each and every occasion;

(connected to LG2 and LG3) clearly explain conclusions of their reasoning, in a clear and formally correct way, propose solution and defend them – stressing their strengths and critically analysing their limits.

Argomenti trattati
Tools such as: A3, MSA, DOE, ANOVA, Clustering, multicriteria decision making, development of a scorecards of KPIs, will be discussed and used in class.

Modalità di valutazione

Final exam: written individual test

The written exam is made of 2-3 exercises presenting the quantitative analysis of a present situation in a company: the student is requested to detect the problem (LG2), identify correctly the right problem solving tool to use (LG1, LG2 and LG3), then develop a solution applying the tool and discuss it (LG2 and LG3).
