Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

While carrying out actions, human beings use a wide variety of information. Each sense offers social players a certain way of relating with their surrounding environment (sight, touch, sound, smell, taste). Each culture and social group has elaborated and organised certain types, logic, support and strategies for handling these information channels. The course introduces students to an analysis of the plurality of forms and social organisations that the various human societies have created to structure their communication. During the lessons, matters such as the social life of the media, the nexus between senses, actions and information, the bond between the social habitus and styles of communicative interactions, the cultural varieties of forms, practices and information supports are faced. Lessons provide an alternation of theory and practice.

- know how to apply the anthropological instruments for analysing study cases and critically observing the communication processes;
- can identify anthropological dynamics in the design circles in which they work;
- know how to independently and critically assess different contexts of communication design and integrate an anthropological vision of design methodology.

Argomenti trattati

The course is about how communications change, structure and condition individual people and societies. The main objective is to update students’ awareness and knowledge about contemporary communication technologies that could impact on their present or future professions in design. The course will also examine current changes in social dynamics and politics that are related to communications. 

  1. What is meant by anthropology - From orality to full literacy - theories of language formation and association with different media
  2. The rapid rise of electricity – connections – volume – speed – complexity – configurations of social media – grammar of media – McLuhan’s decalogue
  3. Living in three spaces - issues of design - screenology
  4. Identity – anthropological considerations – private versus public – digital unconscious
  5. Connected Intelligence – designing connectivity – hypertinence (search engines from Yahoo to Big Data) – cognitive revolutions – i-addiction
  6. The education of Pinocchio 2.0– Jesuits 2.0 – design a media balanced curriculum
  7. The Internet as a social limbic system – from Arab Spring to Jihad – cyber-bullism – social support sites
  8. Programming the world – The era of transparency – Singapore – social credits – new ethics – design an ethical order of priorities

There are no pre-requisites for attendance.

Modalità di valutazione

During the course, students in groups of three will present a review of a selection from among the suggested books and essays. Students will also form groups of 5 to 8 persons to develop, propose and realize an app, a mooc, a transmedia design, or any other digital production on a theory or topic of their choice. The final oral examination will bear on a short interview on what each student has accomplished in his or her groups, as well as a few questions about the following books:

  • Derrick de Kerckhove, The Skin of Culture, Routledge and Kegan Paul, 1997.
  • Non frequenters: need to add one more book for their exam:
  • Amber Davisson and Paul Booth (eds.), Controversies in Digital Ethics, Bloomsbury, 2016.

Assessment will be based both on individual performance during class presentations and final exam, on how students have learned to collaborate in specifically configured teams assembled according to the principles and method of connected intelligence.
